Ebor Festival Day 4 Betting tips

Day four of the 2025 Ebor meeting takes place on Saturday, with the feature race of the entire week complemented by a new Group 1 in the shape of the City of York Stakes.

The card features last year’s St James’s Palace Stakes winner Rosallion, who bids to go one better than when second in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood last time.

Our expert, Marcus Buckland, has a trio of selections on the card including one in the feature race, one in the opener, and another in the big staying handicap for three-year-olds.

1.50 York – King’s Gambit

This opening Group 3 over 1m2f should present KINGS GAMBIT with a good opportunity for a belated first success of the year, Harry Charlton’s four-year-old having been given a nice break since running with real promise in the Listed Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

The son of Saxon Warrior showed some very smart form during a progressive three-year-old campaign, most notably when finishing a close third behind Aidan O’Brien’s pair Los Angeles and Illinois in the Group 2 Great Voltiguer Stakes over 1m4f at this meeting.

Things haven’t quite gone to plan for him since, but he’s been gelded this summer and appeared to appreciate the drop back to this trip when keeping on strongly from the rear of the field to snatch third at Ascot.

He’s the clear pick at the ratings alongside Ed Dunlop’s Skukuza, but that one has stamina to prove beyond a mile and will likely be vulnerable to stronger stayers.

2.25 York – Golden Handshake

Andrew Balding has a good record in this staying handicap in recent seasons and his lightly-raced Tarriace holds strong claims. However, William Haggas has an equally impressive record and preference is given to his GOLDEN HANDSHAKE, who likely remains ahead of his recently adjusted mark.

The son of Zarak has progressed considerably with each of his four starts to date, building on an eyecatching Nottingham second with victories in a Lingfield maiden and Newbury handicap off a mark of 84.

He wasn’t particularly impressive when winning at Newbury, but there was a suspicion he was only doing just enough and that may have fooled the handicapper, who put him up only 4lb to a mark of 88.

From a yard that won this with Hamish in 2019 and Soulcombe in 2022, he’s open to any amount of further improvement and will have no excuses from stall four.

3.35 York – Shadow Dance

This is every bit as competitive as you’d expect for a handicap with first place prize money of £300,000, with all 22 runners holding each-way claims on their very best form.

Many of those towards the top end of the market have been very lightly raced this season and are probably the ones to focus on, these include Roger Varian’s SHADOW DANCE, who should be spot on for this following last month’s encouraging seasonal return at Glorious Goodwood.

The five-year-old has had only 10 starts in his life so far, winning twice, most recently the valuable Sky Bet Handicap over 1m4f at this meeting off a 5lb lower mark last year.

A fine third in the Mallard Handicap upped to an extended 1m6f at Doncaster subsequently, he wasn’t seen again for 319 days, but ran with a huge amount of promise to finish ninth of the 18 runners behind Westbridge over an adequate distance of 1m2f at Goodwood. He’ll be tighter for that run and should relish this extra half-mile.
