Defending champions can prevail again

It’s rare to see two successive generations of Under-21 players with such depth and talent, but that’s exactly the enviable position England find themselves in. The Young Lions look well placed to justify their narrow favouritism by beating Germany in Saturday’s final and repeating the success of their 2023 counterparts.

While Germany edged England 2-1 in the group stage, that result came during a period of experimentation from Lee Carsley, who fielded a side without a recognised striker and just two natural defenders. Since then, a more settled England XI has emerged, and it’s made all the difference.

Back-to-back knockout wins over joint-favourites Spain and then the Netherlands, who managed just 0.15 expected goals in the semi-final, suggest this team has found its rhythm. Germany will pose a threat, but Carsley’s experience and tactical acumen could well guide England to another Under-21 European Championship title.

Tricky Trees talent to shine in Bratislava

Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott has been the standout performer for England so far, scoring four goals, including a brilliant brace in the semi-final win over the Netherlands. But it could be his semi-namesake who takes centre stage in Saturday’s final.

Elliot Anderson has quietly played a pivotal role in England’s knockout run, coolly converting the winning penalty against Spain in the quarter-finals before setting up Elliott’s opener in the semi. The Newcastle midfielder offers a strong physical presence and has a natural instinct for timing his runs into the box, qualities that could prove decisive in Bratislava. Don’t be surprised if he leaves his mark on the final.

Germany should have enough to net in defeat

While England rate the better of the two sides, it would be a major surprise to see a Germany team who have outscored the Young Lions 15-10 in Slovakia and scored at least two times in each of their matches, fail to find the net in the final.

Nick Woltemade is a huge reason for their success, with the Stuttgart giant netting six goals in four appearances at the tournament. It could be tempting to back the forward to score, but he may find life tough against a centre-back pairing of Jarell Quansah and Charlie Cresswell, and playing safe by backing him to have a shot on target could be a smarter move.

Round out your Bet Builder by backing attacking threat Anderson to be involved on the defensive end, too. The Forest battler has been booked five times in his last seven starts and is a big price to pick up a card in the final.
