England to book their spot in the final

A place in the European Under-21 Championship final is up for grabs on Wednesday when England and the Netherlands meet in Bratislava.

England lost their final group game 2-1 to Germany, but they silenced their critics with a 3-1 success over Spain in the quarter-finals.

The Young Lions are now hoping to repeat their success from 1982 and 1984 by winning back-to-back tournaments, having also lifted this title in 2023.

The Netherlands are looking to win the tournament for the first time since they claimed back-to-back tournaments in 2006 and 2007, but they have yet to show their true potential.

The Jong Oranje have reached the semi-finals in two of their last three tournaments, but they only secured four points in the group stages.

Michael Reiziger’s team were held to a 2-2 draw by Finland before losing 2-1 to Denmark. Thankfully, they beat Ukraine 2-0 to finish second in Group D before beating Portugal 1-0 in the quarter-finals.

Reiziger has three key players unavailable due to suspension and that should only aid England’s cause. Ruben van Bommel was sent off against Portugal, while Devyne Rensch and Kenneth Taylor are both also suspended after picking up their second yellow cards of the tournament last time out.

All three players will be missed and England have proven they have the experience on the big stage to navigate this tricky test.

Carsley’s team need to be patient

England may have impressed against Spain last time out, but their performances in the group stage suggest they may not totally outclass the Netherlands.

The Young Lions started the tournament with a 3-1 success over the Czech Republic before they were then held to a 0-0 draw by Slovenia.

A 2-1 defeat to Germany was still not enough to eliminate them, but Carsley’s team have shown signs that they are vulnerable.

Games between these two sides are often close affairs, with five of the last six meetings finishing in a draw. While England should be able to take advantage of the Netherlands’ absentees, they will want to give nothing away on Wednesday.

England allowed Spain back into the game last time out, but Carsley will be happy with a low-scoring victory in Bratislava.

Midfielders to make their mark

England U21s certainly have the “bigger names” in their ranks in the final third heading into Wednesday’s encounter.

Carsley has relied on the attacking flair of James McAtee and Harvey Elliott and they should both be busy this week.

McAtee turned down the chance to play for Manchester City at the FIFA Club World Cup and he has seven goals from his 21 appearances for the Young Lions. Six of those have come in his last nine starts and he is one to watch in the final third.

Elliott has registered 11 shots already in the tournament and he will look to shoot on sight after scoring twice already for his country this summer.

The Netherlands have conceded 50 fouls in four games, 17 more than England. Reiziger’s young squad have collected nine yellow cards in that time, two more than the Young Lions and they may need to concede cheap fouls to stop the likes of McAtee, Elliott, Elliot Anderson, Jay Stansfield and Jonathan Rowe from advancing down the field.
