Japan capable of frustrating Three Lions

After England stumbled to a 1-1 draw against Uruguay, their World Cup preparations continue with another home friendly against Japan, who impressed in a 1-0 win over Scotland on Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel will again use the run-out as a chance to assess some of the fringe members of his squad, although his options have been limited with several players initially called-up now returning back to their clubs. 

The German coach will still want a more rounded performance from his side, though.

And up against opponents ranked 23 places beneath fourth-placed England in FIFA’s rankings, the Three Lions should prevail, but it may not be a completely straightforward evening for the hosts.

England grew more laboured the longer Friday’s friendly with Uruguay wore on, and unfortunately for the fans who will again make their way to Wembley in their thousands, this next friendly clash could serve up something similar. 

It’s a rarity to see an entertaining, free-flowing England friendly these days.

Admittedly the fact there are often plenty of substitutions, and reserve players given the chance to impress from the off doesn’t help in this regard but, with only two more games after this to fine-tune his line-up before the showpiece tournament, Tuchel needs to see an improvement on Tuesday. 

However, the feeling is we may get more of the same, at least to start with against Japan.

England have gone in level at half-time at 0-0 in their last two games and this could be yet another slow-starting game.

Japan, meanwhile, approach the Wembley clash in solid form, although their win in Glasgow on Saturday was their first run out since November.

Hajime Moriyasu’s side are on a four-game winning run, which includes an eye-catching 3-2 success over Brazil in October, and they have real hopes of progressing far in the World Cup this summer after being placed in a group alongside the Netherlands, Tunisia and the winners of the UEFA play-off between Poland and Sweden.

The visitors will be set up well to defend, and could stifle England in the opening half at least. The Japanese were worthy victors over the Scots, winning the shot count 18-8, while they also had more possession and more touches in the opposition box at Hampden.

This game may well follow a different pattern, with England largely dominating the ball and creating the better chances, but Japan showed what they were made of at the weekend and will be difficult opponents to break down, despite still being shorn of injured skipper Wataru Endo.

Solanke to take his chance this time

Dominic Solanke looked sharp, at least to begin with, on Friday as the striker threw off the troubles at club level with Spurs to try and take his chance on the international stage.

Solanke knows if he is to earn a place on the plane this summer he will probably now need to make a real impact in the penalty area on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old has not had many opportunities for England with Thursday’s run-out just his fourth cap but, among the centre-forwards auditioning to be Harry Kane’s understudy for the World Cup, he deserves another chance to impress.

A goal for him here, which would be his first for his country, would really help further his individual cause and the price handily appeals too, as he is 6/5 to net anytime, and this is a forward who has looked much fitter and stronger at club level in recent weeks.

Barnes and Kane among those tipped to catch eye

Backing a goalless first half could pay off as part of a Bet Builder. England have been held 0-0 at half-time in their last two outings, while Japan were also involved in a goalless first half last time out against Scotland.

Harry Kane was rested for the Uruguay game, but the prolific Bayern Munich striker should return to lead the line against Japan and it would be no surprise to see him scoring again at Wembley upon his recall.

Kane has 78 goals for his country as he looks to add another to his record on Tuesday, while his ridiculous club tally this season for Bayern stands at 48.

Finally, Harvey Barnes is among plenty of England squad-members who must try and do all they can to impress Tuchel if they also want to make the final summer list.

Barnes came on for the final 20 minutes on Thursday but, with plenty of withdrawals since, the Newcastle winger may get the nod from the start against Japan.

Barnes didn’t manage to get a shot away during his limited minutes against Uruguay, but he has had two or more shots in 10 of his last 13 appearances for Newcastle at club level.
