England vs Uruguay Tips

Our betting expert has three England vs Uruguay tips for Friday’s international friendly match at London’s Wembley Stadium (kick-off, 7.45pm). Scroll down for the analysis behind his selections.

Uruguay can tame the Three Lions

England have home advantage and an overall stronger pool of players to pick from when they meet Uruguay, but the Three Lions look far too short to win at Wembley on Friday.

Thomas Tuchel is without 11 of the 35-man squad that he selected for the international games against Uruguay and Japan and those absentees include key performer Harry Kane, Declan Rice, Anthony Gordon, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa and Elliot Anderson.

Reece James and Eberechi Eze are unavailable and a likely back four of Tino Livramento, John Stones, Harry Maguire and Lewis Hall won’t be giving Uruguay’s attackers sleepless nights.

England have kept 11 clean sheets in their last 12 matches, but Tuchel has built a side reliant on defence and the first-choice rearguard is not in action on Friday night.

England have won five competitive games on the bounce, but wins over Andorra, Serbia (twice), Latvia and Albania is not top-level form and the Three Lions were thumped 3-1 by Senegal in an international friendly last year.

Uruguay are an expertly coached side under Marcelo Bielsa andthey have lost only one of their last seven games.

The Sky Blues can call on excellent performers Federico Valverde, Darwin Nunez and Maximiliano Araujo and the gulf in class between these sides isn’t as great as offers of 21/4 suggest.

Goals unlikely to flow in London

There have been just 18 goals in Uruguay’s last 10 matches and the South Americans are a defensively solid and robust side.

The Sky Blues have kept five clean sheets in their last nine games, while it’s 11 in 12 for England.

The Three Lions have seen five of their last 10 games go under 2.5 goals and many of those matches have come against inferior opponents to a side at the level of Uruguay.

Only four of the last 16 matches Bielsa’s men have contested have featured more than three strikes and it’s difficult to envisage a free-flowing and high-scoring tie on Friday night.

Valverde could be Uruguay’s spark

There are few players in better goalscoring form than Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde.

The midfielder has hit six goals in his last five games and that includes a hattrick against Manchester City and a goal against Atletico Madrid.

It’s clear that top-level opposition is no boundary to Valverde’s goalscoring threat and England may not be able to keep the Real Madrid man at bay.

Darwin Nunez is averaging 3.03 shots on goal per 90 minutes in the Saudi Pro League this season and the Al-Hilal striker is fancied to hit at least one effort at goal on Friday night.

Of course, the Saudi top division is a poor standard, but Nunez has scored 10 goals in his last 19 international appearances for Uruguay.

Playing Valverde to score and Nunez to take at least one shot in a bet builder pays 13/2.
