England looking to turn the page under new skipper Brook
England are hoping for a fresh start under new ODI captain Harry Brook and they certainly need one after losing their last seven 50-over matches.
With Jos Buttler having stepped down after a winless ICC Trophy campaign that brought group-stage defeats by Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa, there is a chance for a new chapter to be written under his former vice-captain.
Brook has some experience in the role having stepped in for Buttler in the series against Australia last year and he has also skippered the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.
The 26-year-old seemed to relish the role against Australia, scoring 110 not out, 87 and 72 to close out the series after a slow start.
England are coming into this series with no one-day warm-up match and are making a quick switch of format after playing a one-off Test against Zimbabwe last week, and while that went well as they won by an innings and 45 runs inside three days, the West Indies have had a more suitable preparation.
The Caribbean side, skippered by wicketkeeper Shai Hope, drew a three-match ODI series in Ireland last week. After struggling in the first match, losing by 124 runs after being bowled out for 179, their batsmen really found their feet.
They posted an imposing 352-8 in the second match before the contest was washed out, then levelled the series with a 197-run win on the DLS method after racking up 385-7 in game three.
The West Indies are major underdogs for the series but they look capable of winning at least one match and their best chance could come at Edgbaston on Thursday, where they might be able to catch England cold.
A 2-1 series correct-score in England’s favour looks a better bet than a clean sweep for the hosts, with the second and third ODIs scheduled for Cardiff on Sunday and The Oval next Tuesday.

Carty arriving in red-hot form
The West Indies’ performances in Ireland will have caught the attention of the England management with batsman Keacy Carty at the top of their list of concerns.
Carty soon took a liking to the Irish pitches with a pair of big scores in the second and third matches and he could keep up his good work in the opener in Birmingham.
Carty hit 102 off 109 deliveries in the second match in Dublin, with 13 fours and one six. He then hammered 170 from 142 balls in the series finale, hitting 15 fours and eight sixes.
The 28-year-old from Sint Maarten enjoyed facing England’s attack in the ODI series in the Caribbean in November, scoring 71 in Antigua and an unbeaten 128 in Barbados. He will be facing a home line-up missing the injured Gus Atkinson and could lead his side’s efforts once more.

Forde can start series in top gear
Matthew Forde is a rising star of the West Indies squad and the all-rounder is capable of claiming at least two wickets in the opening match of the series.
Forde bowled well in the home series against England, taking eight wickets over three matches and claiming at least two victims each time.
He took three wickets in a losing cause in the first ODI against Ireland last week, when he also equalled the record for the fastest one-day half-century by smashing 50 off just 16 balls, matching AB De Villiers’ effort from 2015.
Forde is a decent price to chip in with at least two wickets in the first match.
