Exclusive: Di Marzio issues Liverpool transfer update on Salah and Alexander-Arnold

Updated on

With the January transfer window fast approaching, we had the pleasure of catching up with esteemed transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio. He gave us insight into the future of Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, who has been forthright with his feelings on the contract negotiations with the club. He also delved into what lies ahead for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has also yet to agree a new deal with his boyhood club.

In this article:

  • Salah could still remain at Liverpool
  • Saudi Pro League is Salah’s next destination if he leaves Liverpool
  • Carlo Ancelotti wants Trent Alexander-Arnold

Salah could still remain at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah recently caused a huge stir in the mix zone after Liverpool’s tightly contested 3-2 win over Southampton, when he said that he’s more “out” of Liverpool than “in” as he has not received any offers from the club yet. Salah proved his worth in their comeback win on Sunday as he has many times during his time at the club. Could it all be coming to an end? Di Marzio is of the belief that the Salah and Liverpool story hasn’t yet been concluded.

“I think it’s difficult for him to come back to Italy. Yes, he started in Fiorentina and Roma, but I don’t think it’s possible for him to come back.

“I heard the words from Arne Slot, and I think there is a possibility that he can sign a new contract with Liverpool. I don’t think it’s finished between Salah and Liverpool, I think the club will talk to the agents to pursue the possibilities of going on negotiation.”

Saudi Pro League is Salah’s next destination if he leaves Liverpool

Salah has also long been linked with a move to Saudi Pro League and with his contract running down, reports suggest this could be his next move. Al Ittihad are said to have offered Liverpool more than £150million for Salah last year but the Egyptian remained at the club and now finds locked in a deadlock with the Reds. If Salah were to leave Liverpool, Di Marzio claims Saudi Arabia would be Salah’s next likely destination.

“I think Saudi Arabia is the likely destination for a player like him, because the clubs can afford his wages. PSG has a different project now and wants young players, so I don’t think they can go for him, and I also don’t think that other Premier League clubs can get him.

“It’s the right moment in his career to go to Saudi Arabia, because he still can contribute to the movement of Saudi Arabian football. He is not at the end of his career, but I still don’t think it’s finished between him and Liverpool.”

Carlo Ancelotti wants Trent Alexander-Arnold

Meanwhile, the future of right Trent Alexander-Arnold is also up in the air. His contract with Liverpool, his boyhood club runs until 2025, and while discussions regarding an extension continue, nothing has been finalised between player and club. Real Madrid are rumoured to be monitoring his situation and the interesting thing is Trent would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club as of January 2025. Are Real Madrid in pole position to secure both Alexander-Arnold and Alphonso Davies? Di Marzio issues his verdict on Real Madrid’s rumoured interest in the full-back.

“Real Madrid have other problems right now than Trent Alexander-Arnold. They have problems in their central defence, and we don’t know if Ancelotti will stay. Ancelotti is the guy who wants Trent Alexander-Arnold, but at this moment in time Real Madrid are thinking about the present.

“Right now it’s not a matter of Trent going to Real Madrid. They have other things to focus on in January. They would like to get Rafa Marin back from Napoli, because he knows how to play for Real Madrid, but I don’t know if Napoli wants to let him go.”

Liverpool are set to take on Manchester City this weekend, where the Reds will be looking to pick up another win, as they look to pull further clear of their title-chasing rivals. Arne Slot’s side are priced at 11/10 on bet365 to win against an out-of-form Manchester City, and be sure to check out the bet365 bonus code, as they’ve got an eye-catching sign-up offer for new customers.
