Glorious Goodwood Day 1 betting tips
The Goodwood Cup is the big race of the day and Aidan O’Brien’s Illinois will be bidding to go one better, after finishing second in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.
Our expert has had a look at the card and picked out their three strongest fancies, which include an Aidan O’Brien-trained juvenile who could be a force to be reckoned with in the latter stages of the season.
- 1.55 Goodwood – Dorset @ 9/4 with Tote
- 3.05 Goodwood – Scandinavia @ 11/4 with BetMGM
- 4.55 Goodwood – Protest @ 11/2 with bet365
1.55 Goodwood – Dorset
There was only one name dominating the juvenile races at Royal Ascot – Aidan O’Brien. The Ballydoyle maestro swept the Coventry, Norfolk, and Queen Mary Stakes, underlining the quality and depth of his two-year-old team this season. With that in mind, DORSET looks a colt to keep firmly on side.
A son of Wootton Bassett, Dorset is bred for the job. His dam is a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Winter, and he’s already shown he’s inherited plenty of talent. On debut at the Curragh, he shaped with real promise to finish a close second, sticking to his task well and only going down by half a length to a Ryan Moore-ridden stablemate.
He built on that effort second time out, returning to the same course and distance and making all the running in impressive style. He put clear daylight between himself and another stablemate, Benvenuto Cellini, who has since franked the form with a strong win. Even horses further down the field, like New Zealand in seventh, have gone on to score, adding substance to the form.
Given the way he’s progressing, a step up in class is fully justified, and all the signs point to Dorset being up to the task. He’s a very promising colt from a yard flying with its juveniles — expect a bold showing.

3.05 Goodwood – Scandinavia
Illinois is the logical favourite for the race, but he does have a habit of finding one to good at Group 1 level. O’Brien may still win the race however, as he also runs the progressive three-year-old SCANDINAVIA.
This horse was a little disappointing in three starts at two but left that form well behind when winning easily at Navan on seasonal debut. Clearly the step up to 1m2f helped and he appears to be a much stronger horse this season.
Badly outpaced early on, he really knuckled down and stayed on to finish fifth. He wasn’t beaten that far in the end and improved again next time out. Making a mockery of his rivals in a Newmarket Group 3, he pulled eight-and-a-half lengths clear.
More will be needed at this level, but he’s clearly going the right way and further progress is on the cards. Stepping up to two miles should suit and we haven’t seen the best of him yet.

4.55 Goodwood – Protest
Every pound counts in competitive handicaps such as this and Roger Varian’s filly PROTEST could prove to be well treated on her first start in this sphere.
She won a Class 2 novice at Chelmsford on debut last term and has raced exclusively in Listed races since.
Her two-and-a-quarter-length sixth behind Crimson Advocate first time out this year has worked out well, as the winner went on to score at Royal Ascot and the third has also won since.
It’s hard to knock the form of her fourth at Newbury last time and returning to a mile here will suit.
An opening mark of 92 isn’t massively generous, but there could still be some room to manoeuvre and she remains lightly raced.
