Glorious Goodwood Day 1 Betting tips
Day One of Glorious Goodwood sees eight competitive races, with our tips for the Vintage Stakes and Goodwood Cup listed below.
Haffner can claim Vintage Stakes
Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore look perfectly poised to strike in Tuesday’s Group 2 Coral Vintage Stakes with the highly promising Haffner, who arrives at Glorious Goodwood with a rapidly progressive profile.
The two-year-old colt stepped forward significantly from his debut to comfortably land a competitive seven-furlong maiden at the Newmarket July meeting just 17 days ago.
The primary obstacle standing in his way is Godolphin’s Al Hudaiba, who currently tops the betting after claiming the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at the same Newmarket meeting. While undeniably talented, Al Hudaiba has been notably erratic, he bizarrely unseated William Buick at Yarmouth earlier this season and hung noticeably under pressure during his recent victory.
Crucially, because of his recent Group 2 success, Al Hudaiba must concede a 3lb penalty to the rest of the field on Tuesday, and Appleby has resorted to first-time blinkers in an attempt to keep his star running straight.
Receiving weight from a flawed favourite, Haffner offers a good alternative with a massive ceiling for improvement. With Ryan Moore in the saddle to navigate the Sussex Downs circuit, Haffner can announce himself as one of the season’s premier juveniles.

Scandinavia to prove pedigree again
Scandinavia firmly cemented his status as the undisputed king of the staying division with a gripping victory in last month’s Ascot Gold Cup, and Aidan O’Brien’s exceptional four-year-old looks virtually impossible to oppose in Tuesday’s Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup.
Arriving on a spectacular six-race winning streak, the Ballydoyle star has continually found ways to win, combining high-class cruising speed with a formidable attitude when challenged. Partnered once again by Ryan Moore, he sets a standard that his rivals will struggle to match on the opening day of the festival.
The two-mile showpiece is heavily billed as a rematch with Trawlerman, who pushed Scandinavia all the way to the line in their Royal Ascot battle. However, the drop back down to two miles from the marathon two-and-a-half-mile Gold Cup trip heavily favours O’Brien’s charge.
While John and Thady Gosden’s experienced eight-year-old is a proven warrior, Scandinavia possesses a superior gear. That injection of pace makes him ideally suited to the sharp, nature of the Sussex Downs, giving Moore the perfect weapon to navigate Goodwood’s downhill-to-uphill straight.
With his main rival needing a career-best effort to reverse the Ascot form over a less optimal distance, Scandinavia is primed to win again and add a glorious Goodwood Cup crown to his glittering resume.
