Grand Slam of Darts betting tips

Littler, who beat Martin Lukeman 16-3 in the final of last year’s Grand Slam, goes into his defence as a 2/1 favourite.

The 18-year-old sensation, who will also have the role of defending champion when the World Championship starts at Alexandra Palace next month, has already won the UK Open, World Matchplay and World Grand Prix this year.

Littler has the added incentive of knowing he will become world number one for the first time should he retain his Grand Slam crown. The tournament starts on Saturday, with the first of the group-stage matches.

The 32 competitors are split into eight groups of four, with the top two in each group progressing to the knockout stages. Littler starts his round-robin campaign against Karel Sedlacek in Group E. The knockout action starts on Wednesday, with the final the following Sunday.

Littler to stay in fast lane and retain his title

The world rankings still say otherwise, but Littler is clearly the best player in the world and he can be expected to leapfrog Luke Humphries come the end of the Grand Slam of Darts.

Littler is consistently brilliant and has been winning titles as a teenager at an historic rate. He will become the youngest world number one in history if getting the job done in Wolverhampton.

It is difficult to see him failing to qualify from a group with Daryl Gurney, Connor Scutt and Karel Sedlacek, then the long matches in the knockout stages play into his hands.

From the quarter-finals onwards, matches are played over the best of 31 legs, so the superior player has plenty of time to assert their authority. Littler passed his driving test last week, is full of beans and looks a rock-solid 2/1 favourite for the Grand Slam.

Humphries should be waiting for rival in final

Darts fans have got used to seeing the Lukes – Littler and Humphries – meet in plenty of important finals over the last few years, and the same scenario may unfold in the Grand Slam.

Humphries has knuckled down on the practice board in recent weeks, showing improved form, nearly winning the European Championship.

Littler will be fully aware that his biggest threat in Wolverhampton is Humphries, but they are the top two seeds.

This means that they are scheduled to meet in the final. Given the tough draws that other top players have got – Josh Rock, Michael van Gerwen and Gian van Veen have all been housed in terrible groups – the chances of another Littler versus Humphries final seem better than the odds of 13/2 suggest.

Expect plenty of big fish over long matches

The quality of professional darts continues to improve, with youngsters like Rock and Van Veen threatening to elevate themselves to the standard of the Lukes, and the Wolverhampton crowd should enjoy some huge checkouts.

Over 3.5 170 checkouts can be backed at 6/4, which seems a juicy price considering the class and form of some of the leading protagonists.

Given the length of the matches – best of 19 legs in the last-16 and best of 31 from the quarters onwards – it is reasonable to expect four or more 170 checkouts in the tournament.

Crowd-pleaser Littler often sets himself up for the checkout known as the ‘big fish’, and Nuke can be fancied to contribute to the 170-checkout total.
