Gus Poyet on Brighton’s Progress, Joao Pedro’s Rise, and Man United’s Transfer Links

Updated on

When you think of Brighton & Hove Albion and Gus Poyet, one moment that stands out is his abrupt and somewhat controversial departure. However, his tenure at the club played a crucial role in shaping Brighton’s modern identity.

Under his leadership, the Seagulls secured the League One title with an attractive, possession-based style of football. He oversaw their transition from the Withdean Stadium to the Amex, establishing them as a competitive force in the Championship. In 2012-13, he guided Brighton to the playoffs before falling short against Crystal Palace in the semi-finals.

Since his departure, the club has continued its ascent, now a well-respected Premier League side with a reputation for smart recruitment and progressive football. But much of that foundation was built during Poyet’s time. We caught up with the former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder to discuss Brighton’s impressive season under Fabian Hürzeler and some of the key players making their mark.

Joao Pedro: A Striker for Any Premier League Club

One of Brighton’s standout performers this season has been Joao Pedro. The Brazilian forward has enjoyed a stellar campaign, earning a recall to the national team for World Cup qualifiers. Signed for £30 million in 2023, Pedro has repaid that investment with 28 goals in 65 appearances.

His form has attracted interest from top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea. Poyet believes Pedro has the quality to thrive at any club in the division—including an Arsenal side in need of a top-class striker.

“Joao Pedro can play for any Premier League team, including Arsenal,” Poyet said.

“I met Brighton’s coach, Fabian Hürzeler, in Germany, and we spoke about football for hours like two little kids. He really impressed me, and I’m not surprised Joao is thriving under him.

“He’s taken on responsibility, understands his role – whether as a No. 9 or playing just behind the striker – and he’s embraced the demands of the Premier League. Arsenal are missing something up front, and he’s a very good player.”

Mitoma Has the Quality for Manchester United

Brighton’s transfer strategy has unearthed several gems in recent years, and Kaoru Mitoma is no exception. The Japanese winger’s explosive dribbling and attacking intelligence have made him a target for clubs across Europe.

Al Nassr recently had a £54.4 million bid rejected and reportedly increased their offer to £75 million, with potential add-ons pushing it to £90 million. However, interest isn’t limited to the Middle East – Manchester United are also rumoured to be keen on securing his services.

Poyet sees Mitoma as a player capable of making the leap to a club of United’s stature.

“In terms of quality, he’s good enough for Manchester United,” Poyet stated.

“The question is, can he take the next step and perform at an even higher level, as a club like United demands? He’s a top player, and I hope he does because he’s so important to Brighton. I love watching him play.”

Welbeck Isn’t the Answer to United’s Striker Woes

While Mitoma has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, another Brighton player, Danny Welbeck, has also been suggested as a potential solution to United’s struggles in front of goal.

With Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling for consistency, Wayne Rooney recently floated the idea of bringing Welbeck back to the club.
Poyet, however, dismissed the notion outright.

“Welbeck isn’t the solution to Manchester United’s problems. I completely disagree with Wayne. Maybe he knows more than me, but from the outside looking in, the answer isn’t Danny Welbeck.”

As Brighton continue to evolve, their ability to develop talent like Pedro and Mitoma will only strengthen their position as one of the Premier League’s smartest operators.

Whether United come calling or not, these players are proving that Brighton is no longer just a stepping stone – it’s a destination in its own right.
