The third event of the DP World Tour’s ‘Back 9’ takes place at the famous K Club in County Kildare, Ireland, this week, with a star-studded field battling it out for Irish Open glory.
Rory McIlroy, winner at this course in the 2016 edition, has been installed as the 9/2 favourite, ahead of Ryder Cup teammate and LIV golfer Tyrrell Hatton, who is priced at 16/1.
Patrick Reed, Tom McKibbin and Brooks Koepka, who also ply their trade on the Saudi-backed circuit, will be teeing it up, but defending champion Rasmus Højgaard will not be in attendance.

Buoyant Lowry to land Irish crown
This week’s tournament takes place on the Palmer North Course, where wide fairways offer freedom from the tee, but with water in play on 15 holes, accuracy with irons will be crucial.
With that in mind, Shane Lowry makes strong appeal as the headline pick. The Irishman ranks fourth in strokes gained approach on the PGA Tour this season and arrives in good spirits after securing one of Europe’s six Ryder Cup captain’s picks.
Lowry has a rich history at the Irish Open, having famously won the title as an amateur in 2009. At the K Club, he has posted finishes of T23 in 2016 and T3 in 2023, further underlining his affinity with the venue.
Most recently, he finished T13 at the Tour Championship, ranking 10th for approach play and 5th in putting, suggesting his game is peaking at the right time. In front of an expectant home crowd in Straffan, Lowry looks primed to mount a serious challenge.

Canter can clinch third European title
It has been a rollercoaster year for Laurie Canter, who kicked things off in style by winning the Bahrain Championship in February, his second DP World Tour title, before backing it up with a runner-up finish at the South African Open just two starts later.
However, momentum soon stalled as the Englishman endured a run of four straight missed cuts, followed by a T64 finish at the British Masters on his most recent outing.
Even so, there were encouraging signs at the Belfry, where Canter ranked 37th in greens in regulation, a statistic that could prove vital at this week’s test.
He also boasts a top-15 and a top-20 finish from four previous Irish Open appearances, suggesting he enjoys the challenge. A return to the K Club could be just what he needs to rediscover his spark and reassert himself as a contender.
- Irish Open Tip 2: Laurie Canter @ 80/1
Forrest to make quick return to winner’s circle
Scotland’s Grant Forrest ended his four-year trophy drought with victory at the Nexo Championship in August, securing a four-stroke win over Joe Dean, and it was perhaps no surprise to see him miss the cut on his next start at the British Masters.
The 32-year-old won’t allow failing to make the weekend at the Belfry to affect him and he now heads to a part of the world he has excelled in, with just one missed cut from five cracks at the Irish Open.
Forrest was tied-14 on his debut in this tournament in 2019, shared fourth in 2021, ended up in a tie for third in 2023 at the K Club, and landed a top five last year.
The world number 173 clearly enjoys this kind of test and he looks to be going in under the radar this week.
- Irish Open Tip 3: Grant Forrest @ 80/1
