Italy vs Northern Ireland betting tips & predictions
Our betting expert has three Italy vs Northern Ireland tips for Thursday’s European World Cup qualifying playoff semi-final at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia (kick-off, 7.45pm). Scroll down for the analysis behind his selections.
Azzurri can climb the first hurdle
Italy were second best to a rampant Norway in World Cup qualifying Group I, but they are the biggest hitters in the European playoffs and can advance to the Path A final by defeating Northern Ireland in Bergamo.
The Italians suffered two heavy defeats to Norway, losing 3-0 in Oslo and 4-1 at the San Siro Stadium, and their defensive vulnerabilities will not have gone unnoticed.
Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill loves a challenge and saw plenty of promise from his side in qualifying Group A as they finished with three victories and three defeats.
O’Neill’s team competed well in their matches against Germany, including last October’s 1-0 reverse at Windsor Park when they won the shot count 12 to 11.
But his plans for the Italy match have been severely impacted by injuries to Conor Bradley and Dan Ballard, who are hugely influential players.
Facing Italy without two Premier League players will be hugely challenging, and O’Neill may decide that attack is the best form of defence.
Northern Ireland are short of quality at the top end of the pitch, but they get plenty of balls into the box and could come up with at least one moment against an unconvincing Italian back-line.
Scoring against Italy looks probable, but keeping them out will be nigh-on impossible.
Gennaro Gattuso’s side have scored multiple goals in six of their last seven matches and they can maintain their free-scoring ways.

High stakes affair could deliver a high goal tally
Long gone are the days when Italy would rely on a rock-solid defence to get on the right side of an important match.
These days they prefer a more front-foot approach and they will be encouraged to pour forward against Northern Ireland, who are going into battle with a depleted back-line.
Italy fell well short of Group I winners Norway because they struggled at the back.
Erling Haaland helped himself to three goals over the two games, but there will be nobody of his class in the Northern Ireland front line.
Italy can press high against O’Neill’s side and might be caught out on the odd occasion, but they can emerge victorious from an entertaining game which could feature at least four goals.

Inexperienced Esposito can show his class
Italy have lacked a top-class forward in recent years, but there are signs that Inter striker Pio Esposito could be the player they have been waiting for.
Esposito is already established as a first-team regular with the Nerazzurri and has had a decent season, scoring nine goals across all competitions.
He has notched in each of his last two appearances for Italy and could find the opening goal against Northern Ireland.
A rearguard action will be required from the visitors, who may be forced to resort to some tasty challenges.
Tough-tackling Sunderland defender Trai Hume will carry a lot of responsibility, and he looks as likely as anyone to have his name taken.
