Saturday’s ITV Racing Ascot and Haydock betting tips
The prestigious Betfair Ascot Chase (3.35pm) takes centre stage at Ascot on Saturday, serving as the Grade 1 headline of the weekend.
Complementing the main event is a stacked card featuring the IJF Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase (1.50pm), alongside Haydock’s Grand National Trial (3.15pm).
Our expert has two selections for ITV’s coverage, the first of which comes at Haydock.
3.15 Haydock – Rivers Corner
Despite stepping up in grade, Joe Tizzard’s Rivers Corner arrives in the form of his life, most recently posting a career-best effort when bolting up in the mud at Wincanton last month. In that effort, he travelled well and jumped fantastically, suggesting that the step up to this marathon trip in the Grand National Trial is exactly what he has been crying out for.
His ability to handle the deepest of heavy ground is a massive asset at Haydock, and he combines that bottomless stamina with a dangerous light weight that could prove decisive in the closing stages.
While Deafening Silence is the rightful favourite after his Welsh National heroics, he has to concede significant weight to the selection. Rivers Corner sits at the bottom of the handicap with an engine that is yet to find its limit, making him the value play to outlast the field.
- Hugely attractive new customer welcome offer, offering £50 in bonuses
- Popular Double Delight promo offers great value on goalscorer bets
3.35 Ascot – Pic DOrhy
Despite facing a field of rising stars, Paul Nicholls’ Pic D’Orhy looks the solid option to retain his crown in the Betfair Ascot Chase (3.35), most recently landing the Silviniaco Conti Chase with consummate ease.
His affection for Ascot is well-documented. he rarely puts a foot wrong at this venue, and he combines that course form with the tactical speed to control the race from the outset on the forecast good-to-soft ground.
While Jonbon is the favourite on official ratings, he often requires a stiffer test of stamina to be seen to best effect. Pic D’Orhy is the specialist at this intermediate distance, and his ability to get into a rhythm and apply pressure with his jumping makes him the one they all have to pass.
