ITV Racing – Ascot Betting Tips
The second day of Ascot’s December meeting takes place on Saturday and the feature is the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle (2.25) over a stamina-sapping three miles.
The card features four competitive handicaps to complement the top-class action and the classy Firefox lines up in the opener (12.40).
Our expert, Clive Gildon, has a trio of selections on the card including one in the feature race and a couple more in the big handicaps which make up the last two events.
2.25 Ascot – Impose Toi
The Long Walk Hurdle (2.25) is the big one and this looks like a good opportunity for Impose Toi to confirm himself the new kid on the staying block following his victory at Newbury.
Impose Toi is now unbeaten in two starts over three miles or further and looked stronger than anything at the line at Newbury. He made a bad mistake at the last which would have cost many a horse the race, but not him as he powered through to see off Strong Leader on the run-in.
He was nearly a length and a half quicker than Strong Leader over the final furlong that day, so finished with plenty of petrol in the tank, and has plenty more to offer over staying distances.
Impose Toi has the improvement to defy a 6lb turnaround in the weights with that rival here and can give Nicky Henderson his third win in the race after Punchestowns, who was successful in 2008, and Champ, who landed this race four years ago for the stable.

3.00 Ascot – Pic Roc
The Silver Cup Handicap Chase (3.00) is always a cracker and this year Pic Roc appears to have an outstanding chance for Ben Pauling after an eye-catching fifth at Newbury last time.
That came in one of the most competitive handicap chases of the season and Pic Roc lost all chance at the start. He was left behind and well off the pace, but did remarkably well to make his way through the field and still had plenty of running left inside the closing stages.
He might have gone close to winning that day had he jumped off at the front with everything else and had previously looked a chaser going places when a wide-margin winner at Huntingdon. He was ridden prominently that day and similar tactics here could be rewarded.
Pic Roc runs off the same mark as he did for that excellent effort at Newbury last time and should find this a significantly easier task. He can gain compensation for that latest mishap.

3.35 Ascot – Alexei
The Champion Hurdle is wide open and there is a chance that Alexei might be capable of throwing his hat into the ring if he can land this closing handicap (3.35) off top weight of 12st.
The Joe Tizzard-trained five-year-old is improving rapidly and proved he handles this track when running away with a similar handicap to this over course and distance only last month.
He went up 7lb in the weights but made short work of the opposition when slamming his rivals in the Greatwood at Cheltenham last time. Alexei travelled like a top-class horse that day and was so strong up to the finish that he was still going away from his rivals at the line.
The assessor has taken no chances and whacked Alexei up another 13lb in the weights, but he simply looks better than a handicapper and is almost certainly capable of competing in Grade 1s sooner rather than later. This can be the springboard that he needs to get there.
