Liverpool to set the tone for lively season
Reigning champions Liverpool open the new Premier League campaign against Bournemouth on what could be a barnstorming Friday evening under the Anfield lights.
Arne Slot’s side tailed off last term, failing to win any of their last four games, but they still took the title by 10 points.
After losing last Sunday’s Community Shield on penalties to Crystal Palace, the Reds will look to respond against Bournemouth, a club they have beaten on 11 of the last 12 occasions they have met in the Premier League.
The Cherries have also not won at Anfield in nine attempts in all competitions, but Liverpool have shown that they give teams a chance.
Before the 2-2 at Wembley, they had conceded in five official pre-season matches and also failed to keep a clean sheet in seven of their last eight in the 2024-25 Premier League.
A win for Slot’s side on Friday can set the tone as they chase a record-breaking 21st English league title, but there could be some nervy moments along the way.

Ekitike out to prove his point
Liverpool are constantly being linked with a move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and it is almost being forgotten that they have already spent a reported £90m on a striker this summer.
That’s how much the deal to bring Hugo Ekitike in from Eintracht Frankfurt could rise to, and the Frenchman displayed his class by dusting off the speculation about his new club already seeking a possible alternative by firing in the opening goal against Palace.
Ekitike looked sharp as he played the opening 71 minutes on Sunday and he could hit the ground running with a goal in his first match at his new footballing home.
- Liverpool vs Bournemouth tip 2: Hugo Ekitike to score at any time @ 21/20 with BetMGM
- Welcome offer gives new customers more free bets than most
- Profit boosts and free football predictors are part of a host of attractive offers
Salah can show he still has a part to play
The hype around Isak and Liverpool’s signings of Eiktike and Florian Wirtz has led to doubts over Mohamed Salah’s future despite a brilliant 2024-25 featuring league-best tallies of 29 goals and 18 assists.
Salah missed his penalty in last Sunday’s shootout but has previously scored a record nine times on the league’s opening weekend and could enjoy some freedom against Cherries’ new boy Adrien Truffert.
Truffert has been signed to replace Milos Kerkez, who should line up for the hosts at Anfield, and the Frenchman is worth backing to be booked.
So is teammate Ryan Christie, who was cautioned nine times in last season’s Premier League, including twice against the Reds.
