Liverpool’s woeful form set to continue
Liverpool’s dismal domestic form could suffer another hit when a weakened Reds team face Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup last-16 at Anfield on Wednesday.
The Reds have lost four premier league games on the spin and Saturday’s 3-2 setback at Brentford was their fifth defeat in their last six games overall.
Arne Slot will be desperate to stop the rot against the Eagles but the Dutch coach is also likely to heavily rotate his squad and that could open the door for the visitors to raid Anfield.
Palace are hardly in great form themselves heading to Merseyside but they can take advantage of low expectations – and sapped morale in the home ranks – to progress to the quarter-finals, whilst maintaining their recent good form against the Reds.
The Eagles, who are on a run of four games in all competitions without a win, have beaten Slot’s side twice already this season, following on from a 1-1 draw at Anfield on the final day of last term.
Albeit there are caveats to those stats – as when the two sides met here last in May, Liverpool were signing off after their victorious title campaign, and the Community Shield showdown at Wembley in August was only edged in Palace’s favour via penalties.
However, there is no getting away from the fact that Palace are a bogey side for Liverpool. Their 2-1 Selhurst Park success in September was fully deserved as they tore the champions’ shaky defence to shreds at times – particularly in a one-sided first half.
That display should give Oliver Glasner’s men plenty of confidence for the midweek cup assignment and a nervy Anfield could prove fertile ground for the visitors to prosper.

Goals on the agenda at Anfield
Palace and Liverpool tend to produce entertaining matches and both teams have found the back of the net in each of the last three meetings.
Palace were 1-0 up at Anfield on the last day of last season before Mohamed Salah’s late equaliser, while in the new-season curtain-raiser at Wembley in the summer, the Eagles stormed back from being behind twice to draw 2-2 before then lifting the Community Shield on penalties.
A month ago it was a very late Eddie Nketiah winner that handed the Eagles all three points at Selhurst Park after Liverpool had dragged themselves back into the game but, in truth, Glasner’s side should have been out of sight in the first half when they squandered a plethora of chances.
Even though Liverpool’s form of late has been a worry, the Reds have still scored 16 goals in their nine Premier League games, while they hit five at Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League last week.
Glasner’s men have not been as free-scoring of late but have still netted 12 league goals and were involved in a crazy 3-3 home draw with Bournemouth earlier this month.

Chiesa and Munoz among ones to watch
This competition traditionally gives Premier League bosses the chance to rotate their sides and several fringe players should get their chance to shine.
One man expected to start for Liverpool is forward Federico Chiesa, who can count himself unlucky not to have featured more this season.
The Italian’s only start so far came in the previous round against Southampton, and he caught the eye on that occasion with two assists.
Chiesa has also had a big impact when coming off the bench, scoring late on versus Bournemouth on the opening night, while he has already scored against Wednesday’s opponents when he netted Liverpool’s goal at Selhurst Park in September.
The 28-year-old can once again make an impact and is backed to pick up another goal involvement on Wednesday.
For Palace, Daniel Munoz remains key and he played the full game against Millwall in the previous round so is likely to be in the visitors’ line-up at Anfield.
Munoz is no stranger to getting forward and getting shots off. He had two efforts on target in that win over the Lions in the third round, while he racked up another two on target in the league win over Liverpool.
In total, the highly-rated Colombian has had 15 shots for Palace this season, with eight of those being on target
Adding in both teams to score, which seems likely, boosts the Bet Builder up to 15/2.
