Liverpool should edge past resurgent Leeds
Liverpool conceded in the 96th minute of their 3-3 draw at Leeds in early December and Mohamed Salah’s angry post-match interview made it a day to forget for Reds boss Arne Slot.
However, the champions have responded well, winning 1-0 away to Inter in the Champions League before three straight Premier League victories over Brighton, Tottenham and Wolves.
Liverpool are still not at their ruthless best so Leeds should be backed to get on the scoresheet in a defeat at Anfield on New Year’s Day.
Brighton created plenty of chances in their 2-0 loss at Liverpool, who went on to record nervy 2-1 victories over nine-man Spurs and bottom club Wolves.
Leeds are growing in confidence after excellent home wins over Chelsea (3-1) and Crystal Palace (4-1) and striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his seventh goal in six games to earn a point at Sunderland last weekend.
But Daniel Farke’s men remain vulnerable away from Elland Road. Their only away win on their return to the top flight came against tailed-off Wolves in September and they have conceded 20 goals in nine matches on the road.

Ekitike relishing goalscoring responsibility for Reds
Hugo Ekitike scored twice in three minutes at the start of the second half on Liverpool’s trip to Elland Road and he looks a solid favourite to break the deadlock in the return fixture.
Salah is away with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations and striker Alexander Isak will be sidelined for a couple of months due to a leg injury.
The onus is on summer signings Ekitike and Florian Wirtz to lead Liverpool’s attacking charge and the French forward has made an impressive start to his career in England.
Five of Ekitike’s eight league goals have come in his last four appearances. He followed up his brace at Leeds with two more goals in the win over Brighton, in which he had seven shots, and scored his side’s second goal at Tottenham.
He hit the post early on against Wolves with a lovely effort after a classy through-ball from Wirtz and should get chances against a leaky Leeds defence.

Anfield clash could be a slow-burner
Remarkably, these clubs’ 3-3 draw at Elland Road was goalless at half-time and Thursday’s rematch may be another slow-burning contest.
Liverpool have not conceded in the first half of any of their last seven matches and Slot’s men have scored 21 of their 30 league goals after half-time.
Ethan Ampadu should be in the thick of the midfield battle and the Leeds enforcer is worth backing to collect his fifth booking of the league campaign.
Virgil van Dijk lamented Liverpool’s poor defending at set-pieces after they conceded from a corner against bottom club Wolves last weekend.
Leeds have some dangerous aerial threats including centre-back Jaka Bijol, who scored in December’s home win over Chelsea and had two attempts at goal against Sunderland on Sunday.
