Etihad woes look set to continue for Newcastle
Manchester City have a 2-0 advantage following the first leg at St James’ Park and it looks like a long way back for the cup holders.
It’s 11 straight defeats for Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium and you have to go back to October 2014 for the last time the Magpies won at City’s home ground – with that win coming in this competition.
It’s seven visits without even a goal for the Geordies, with Newcastle’s last strike at the Etihad coming from DeAndre Yedlin in 2019.
Considering City’s recent problems at the back, this looks like the best chance for Eddie Howe’s men to end that frustrating goalless run, even if it probably won’t be enough for victory.
The first leg provided Pep Guardiola’s squad with just their second domestic clean sheet in seven fixtures and it’s worth noting that they conceded twice when facing Newcastle in the league on Tyneside, back in November.
City’s attacking threat remains, though, with the eight-time League Cup winners having scored nine goals in their five matches in this competition and averaging 2.04 goals per game in the Premier League.

Corners on the semi-final agenda
These two teams are inside the top-four for corners collected in the Premier League this season, with Newcastle leading the way.
The Magpies have won 160 in their 24 league games, an average of 6.66 per game, while City have had 136 in their league fixtures.
There were no fewer than 18 corners in Newcastle’s 4-1 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday, 11 of those coming for Howe’s men.
In the first leg, 11 corners were shared at St James’ Park and with a place in the final at Wembley at stake, expect both sides to throw numbers forward and set-pieces could be crucial.

Semenyo quick to find his feet
Antoine Semenyo has certainly hit the ground running since completing his January switch from Bournemouth to Manchester City.
The Ghana international has scored five in six appearances for the Citizens, including a strike in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Tottenham.
Semenyo also scored in the first leg on Tyneside and has two previous goals against Newcastle during his time with the Cherries.
Chris Kavanagh dished out eight yellow cards in the first leg and it’s likely to be a similar story on Wednesday with plenty at stake.
With Joelinton missing and Bruno Guimaraes a doubt, a lot of the midfield onus for Newcastle will be on Sandro Tonali, who has three previous yellow cards against City.
One area where Newcastle will feel they can cause City problems is in the heart of their defence, with the Khusanov / Guehi partnership still in its infancy.
The Uzbek committed two fouls at Tottenham on Sunday and also gave away two fouls in the recent league win over Wolves.
