Pep Guardiola’s team needed to win only two games to seal the seven-team 2023 competition in Saudi Arabia, but they went about their business efficiently, beating Urawa Red Diamonds 3-0 in their semi-final before trouncing Fluminense 4-0 in the final.
City can begin title defence with a comfortable victory
The Premier League side should get their 2025 campaign started with a similarly comfortable success against Moroccan outfit Wydad, and they are boosted not only by the arrival of some exciting new talent, but also from the return to fitness of a key player.
Midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri and playmaker Rayan Cherki could all be in line for their first City starts, while Rodri is set to play in midfield after missing most of the Premier League season with a knee injury.
There should be a spring in the step of the freshened-up side and with Erling Haaland at his best when dominating weaker defences, they should be able to secure a wide-margin win by four or more goals. Casablanca-based Wydad earned their place by winning the 2022 CAF Champions League and they have taken their preparation for the tournament seriously by playing warm-up matches against Sevilla and Porto, but they did not score in either of those contests and should lack the firepower to make their mark in the game.

New signing can make a good first impression
Rayan Cherki is an exciting signing for Manchester City after joining from Lyon this month and it would be no surprise if he is able to celebrate a debut goal against Wydad in Philadelphia.
The 21-year-old should add some real spark to City’s attacking game and he showcased his potential on his recent international debut for France when he was involved in three goals in Les Bleus’ 5-4 defeat to Spain despite being on the pitch for only 34 minutes.

Haaland should relish taking on underdogs
Erling Haaland missed City’s 2023 Club World Cup win due to a stress injury in his foot, so he should be keen to get involved this time.
He ended the domestic campaign in good form and has scored in seven of his last 10 appearances after netting for Norway in their World Cup games against Italy and Estonia this month.
