Manchester United have sacked Erik ten Hag, after a poor start to the season which sees the club currently sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League and struggling for wins in the Europa League. This has seen the club sack the Dutchman with immediate effect following a 2-1 loss to West Ham on the weekend.
INEOS founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe already held crisis talks over the summer as they deliberated sacking ten Hag, but perhaps the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City gave ten Hag more time.
The partnership is now over, with the club finally pulling the plug on ten Hag following a run which has seen them only win 1 match in 8 games in all competitions. The next Man Utd manager has a huge job on his hands, with the Red Devils currently in 14th. They have only scored 8 Premier League goals in 9 match this term, a total only Crystal Palace and Southampton have scored less than.

Next Man Utd Manager? Who is Ruben Amorim?
Ruben Amorim is 39 years-old and has had a very bright start to his career in football management. Amorim was a former professional footballer, with 14 appearances for Portugal and over 300 appearances at club level. He managed to win 12 trophies during his playing career.
Amorim started off his management career at Casa Pia, but quickly moved to Braga and managed their B team. After a successful stint with the B team, he became the manager of Braga, where he managed just 13 games before being poached by rivals Sporting CP. It is at Sporting where Amorim has made a name for himself. He has been manager of the club since the 2019/20 season, taking charge of over 200 games. During this spell, Amorim has won 162 matches, drawn 33 matches and lost just 33 times. Amorim has already won 6 trophies as a manager.
Xavi, Frank and Southgate also in contention for Man Utd job
Ruben Amorim is leading the way when it comes to the next Man Utd manager betting odds. The latest odds for next Man Utd manager see Amorim given a 94% chance, so it feels very much like a matter of when rather than if we will see Amorim in the Old Trafford dugout.
Amorim was linked to West Ham over the summer, but the move never materialised. Amorim is currently at Sporting CP, where he is excelling. Sporting currently have 9 wins from 9 and are top of the Portuguese League. They also have 7 points from their first three Champions League matches.
Some other big names have been linked to the club over the last few months whilst results were not going ten Hag’s way. Gareth Southgate, who resigned from his role as England manager after Euro 2024, is a manager that the owners like as they were heavily linked to him over the summer. Southgate famously took England to two European Championships finals, with the Three Lions suffering heartbreak both times. He also managed to get England to the semi-final of the World Cup on two occasions.
Thomas Frank has done a tremendous job with Brentford, getting them promoted to the Premier League, and has now made them a stable top-flight club. Frank also recorded a top-half finish with Brentford back in 2022/23 as the Bees finished 9th after a fantastic campaign. Meanwhile, Xavi is another manager without a club after he parted ways with Barcelona over the summer. The Spanish legend won the 2023 Super Cup title and the 2022–23 La Liga title in his first full season as the Barcelona’s manager.
Man Utd do not have a lot of managerial options
All the current favourites do come with some pedigree; however, they all currently feel like managers who are not at the highest level but just below. Man Utd will struggle to sign a world-class manager after years of poor results and not battling for the Premier League title. It will no doubt be very interesting to see who they end up signing. The matches don’t get any easier for Manchester United, with Chelsea next up in the Premier League in Sky’s Super Sunday clash.
