Rivals can’t afford a defeat
A win for Arsenal at Sunderland on Saturday will extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to nine points ahead of Sunday’s showdown at the Etihad Stadium.
A defeat for either Man City or Liverpool would leave them nine or 10 points respectively behind the league leaders, as we head into the international break.
Both teams go into this game with confidence high following impressive Champions League victories in midweek.
City disposed of Borussia Dortmund 4-1 on Wednesday, while 24 hours earlier, Liverpool – who completed a league double over Pep Guardiola’s men last term – impressed in a 1-0 success over Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Five of the last 10 league meetings between the sides have finished level, including a 1-1 draw at the Etihad two seasons ago.
It’s also worth noting that in the last three draws, City were the team to take the lead and City HT/Draw FT can be backed at around 12/1.

Duo shine after summer doubts
It’s fair to say there were question marks hanging over the futures of both Jeremy Doku and Dominic Szoboszlai at the end of last season.
After racking up seven goals and 11 assists in all competitions in 2023-24, Doku was expected to kick on and be a key figure for the Citizens last term.
The Belgian managed to bag six goals, just three of those in the Premier League, and nine assists as City finished well off the pace in the title battle.
Doku, though, has started all 10 league matches this season and already has three assists to his name and is now looking for his first goal of the campaign.
Although Liverpool won the league in 2024-25, there was still speculation that Szoboszlai would find first-team chances limited due to the arrival of Florian Wirtz.
Whilst the German has struggled to establish himself, Hungarian star Szoboszlai has flourished and has been one of the key players for Arne Slot.
The midfielder scored in the 2-0 win at City last season and was twice denied a goal by the outstanding Thibaut Courtois on Wednesday.

Bradley ready for another test
Conor Bradley was outstanding in Liverpool’s win over Real, with the Northern Irishman shackling Brazilian superstar Vinicius Junior.
Bradley – who has been cautioned three times this season – is expected to continue at right-back in the absence of Jeremie Frimpong and will face another big task to keep Phil Foden and Doku quiet.
Erling Haaland has already racked up 13 goals in the first 10 league games and was on the scoresheet again in Europe on Wednesday.
The Norwegian is just two goals away from reaching 100 Premier League goals and he would love nothing more than reaching the century against one of City’s major rivals.
Virgil van Dijk is looking for his first domestic goal of the season, but has already got two Champions League goals to his name.
Those both came from headers and he came very close to grabbing another goal from a set-piece against Real, but for a brilliant reflex stop from Courtois.
