Reds to resume stalking Magpies
Newcastle won the EFL Cup final at Wembley in March when these sides last met but that is an outlier amid some really poor stats for the Magpies when they face Liverpool.
Before that, Newcastle had gone 17 games without a win over the Reds, a run that stretched back to December 2015.
There was a thrilling 3-3 draw at St James’ Park last season, though Newcastle’s point owed to a late misjudgement from Caoimhin Kelleher in goal that allowed Fabian Schar to turn in a leveller from a tight angle.
The ongoing Alexander Isak saga will generate lots of headlines but, however it plays out, Eddie Howe is without last season’s leading marksman right now.
His absence was felt in their opening stalemate at Aston Villa as Newcastle had the best of the chances but failed to make them count.
Liverpool are adapting to their new signings but should have too much firepower for Newcastle despite what is sure to be a fiery occasion in the North East.
- Great Odds & Cash Out feature
- High quality on live-streaming service
Ekitike looking the part
Summer signing Hugo Ekitike has made a pleasing start to life at Liverpool. He scored in the Community Shield at Wembley and repeated the feat in the Premier League curtain raiser against Bournemouth, breaking the deadlock in both instances.
His cool finishing already marks the 23-year-old down as having the potential to be everything that Darwin Nunez was not.
He scored 15 times for Frankfurt in the Bundesliga last season and looks a solid acquisition for the Premier League champions. He could be the man to break the deadlock for the third time in as many games.
- Plenty of promotions for existing customers
- Extra Place races available
Goals and cards to flow
It’s plain to see that Liverpool’s defence is going to require some time to adapt to the changes in personnel.
Jeremie Frimpong misses this game through injury, meaning Arne Slot will have to change tact. They have given up chances aplenty in two games, and Newcastle should be capable of scoring.
Florian Wirtz was a little subdued against Bournemouth but it’s only a matter of time before he starts to sprinkle his magic on the Premier League and the German playmaker can make a goal contribution of some form here.
There were seven cautions in the 3-3 Premier League draw here last season and three in the closing minutes of the EFL Cup final in March as tempers got frayed.
Given the situation surrounding Newcastle’s leading man from last term and a possible switch to Merseyside, it won’t come as any shock at all if this game is played on the edge. The referee could have his work cut out and may end up flashing cards to try and keep a lid on proceedings.
