Toon to miss out on Manchester double
A few days before Newcastle and Manchester City tackle two Spanish giants in the UEFA Champions League, they meet at St James’ Park in the FA Cup fifth round.
It is the fifth meeting of the clubs this season with the Citizens having won each of the last three, all since the turn of the year.
Once upon a time this would have been one of the biggest games of their respective seasons.
But days after Newcastle pipped Manchester United in the Premier League and days before they take on Barcelona in Europe, this almost feels like an inconvenience.
It’s the same for City who are smarting after being held 2-2 by Nottingham Forest and Pep Guardiola will have eyes very firmly focused on Wednesday’s showdown with Real Madrid.
That gives the City boss an extra 24 hours to prepare for this tie than Howe – the Toon play Barca on Tuesday – but both managers will make their share of changes.
The bottom line is that Newcastle are 21 points inferior to City in the league, have lost to them three times since the turn of the year and have not kept a clean sheet in 12.
The Draw or City Double Chance is long odds-on naturally, but add in a 2-4 goals range – each of the last seven meetings between these two has come in within that range – and it pays at odds-against.

Familiar foes to pile up the cards
Sam Barrott is the man in charge at St James’ Park on Saturday night and the evidence of previous showdowns is that he is going to be a busy man.
The four previous meetings between these clubs in 2025/26 – three of them this side of Christmas – have produced 22 yellow cards.
Barrott himself took charge of the first game – Newcastle’s sole win on November 22 – and flashed four yellows.

First-half fireworks to pave way
Newcastle average a Premier League-high 7.1 corners per home game this season and don’t presume that just because Man City are the opponents on Saturday night that number is going to plummet.
The Magpies’ corner count in four meetings with City this season reads 5-5-4-5, so have no doubt that they can clear four corners this time around.
Make leg two of the bet builder over 8.5 shots on target, a modest enough target.
The last two games between these sides, admittedly both at The Etihad, yielded 13 and 14 shots on target with both teams contributing. A minimum nine should be no bother.
Finally, look for the fast start which was the case in their last meeting two weeks ago when all three goals in City’s 2-1 win were scored inside 27 minutes.
The last 10 meetings have seen 15 first-half goals, 10 in the second, so throw a dart at the first half producing most goals.
