Newcastle vs Sunderland Betting Tips
Our betting expert has three Newcastle vs Sunderland tips for Sunday’s Premier League clash at St James’ Park (kick-off, 12.00pm). Scroll down for the analysis behind his selections.
- Newcastle to win to nil @ 7/4
- Anthony Gordon to score @ 15/8
- Under 3 goals, Over 4 cards, Joelinton to be booked @ 5/1
Magpies to gain revenge
Sunderland claimed the bragging rights from the first Tyne-Wear derby this season, recording a 1-0 win in December at the Stadium of Light.
Newcastle fans will be desperate for their team to draw parity and that should occur at St James’ Park this weekend.
The Magpies players will have been down after they were thumped 7-2 by Barcelona in the Champions League, but Sunday’s derby is the perfect fixture for their squad to get back on track.
No other game on the schedule should fire them up more and they should have too much quality for the Black Cats,a s while Eddie Howe’s side have been inconsistent at home, their opponents have not travelled well all season.
Regis Le Bris has seen his side win just three of their 15 away games, while they have only scored eight goals on their travels.
Derby games are cagey and nerve-wracking affairs, so an end-to-end game is not expected and Sunderland’s dismal away form should help Newcastle prosper.

Gordon to lead Newcastle charge
Despite the summer additions of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, Howe has used Anthony Gordon in a striker role at times this season and that should help him get his name on the scoresheet this week.
The former Everton man is Newcastle’s primary penalty-taker and he looks good value to hit the back of the net this weekend.
Gordon has scored 16 goals this season in all competitions, with the England international registering 40 shots on target.
Five of those have come in his last two league starts, against Chelsea and Manchester United and he should get plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net in Sunday’s derby.

Ferocious tussle expected at St James’ Park
The Tyne-Wear derby is one of the most passionate games in the footballing calendar and it should be another brutal occasion in Newcastle.
Goals may be hard to come by, though, with both teams scoring in only two of Sunderland’s last nine matches.
Howe’s team were in action in midweek in an intense fixture and they will no doubt keep things tight and try to limit the Black Cats’ goalscoring opportunities.
There should be plenty of cards, with nine dished out at the Stadium of Light in December, while at least five have been brandished in the last three encounters between the two rivals.
One man who will do well to avoid trouble is home midfielder Joelinton, with the Brazilian leading the foul count for the Magpies with 61.
He has conceded 23 fouls in his last eight games and having not played in the first meeting this season, Joelinton will look to leave his mark and make a statement on home turf.
