Leicester City have sacked Steve Cooper after their 2-1 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League on the weekend. The Foxes have only managed 2 wins in their last 10 games in all competitions and the owners of the club clearly feel like they need a new manager in the dugout if they want to stay in the division this season.
No doubt they will want to hire Cooper’s replacement as soon as possible so that they can focus on their rebuild and try to stay in the Premier League this season.

Who is Graham Potter?
Graham Potter is currently the favourite for the Leicester job. The 49-year-old Englishman is highly rated and has managed at Swansea City, Brighton and Chelsea. Prior to these roles, Potter also had managerial experience in Sweden, where he was in charge Ostersunds. Potter had his longest stint as a manager in England at Brighton, where he converted them from a relegation-battling team to a top Premier League side. He managed to do this quickly whilst managing to pick up some big victories over some of the best clubs in the division. Potter is appreciated for laying the foundations at Brighton and helping them become a side who have managed to qualify for Europe after his departure. He took charge of over 100 games at Brighton and over 200 games at Ostersunds. Potter has won one trophy as a manager so far, and this was the Swedish Cup in 2016/17.
His last job saw him in the Chelsea dugout, but this job will most likely be deemed as a failure to many as Potter only managed to keep the job for seven months before he was sacked. It was always going to be a tough job as the Blues were going through a huge transitional period under new owners who were constantly buying and selling a huge amount of players. Potter is known for having an attacking possession-based style of play, which would be the complete opposite to the style of Steve Cooper.
Ruud van Nistelrooy and David Moyes also in the running for Leicester City job
Graham Potter is the favourite for the job, but others in the running include David Moyes and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Moyes has been available since the summer after he parted ways with West Ham. The Scotsman is a very good manager and has had his best periods as a manager at Everton and West Ham. He managed over 500 games for the Toffees and was in charge for a decade before becoming Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at Man Utd. This was always going to be a hard job, and he struggled to deal with rebuilding the club. Moyes was sacked after 8 months in the job at the Red Devils. Since then, he has taken charge of Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham.
He has managed over 260 matches at the Hammers over two different periods and turned them into a side consistently competing for European qualification. West Ham managed to qualify and win the Europa Conference League whilst Moyes was in charge. His style is more similar to Cooper’s, but he would be a great option for the Leicester job.
Former Man Utd footballer van Nisterlrooy would be a very interesting candidate for the role. He was most recently the assistant manager at Manchester United whilst Erik ten Haag was in charge. When ten Haag was sacked earlier this season, van Nistelrooy became the interim head coach, where he managed to win 3 matches and draw one. He has also managed in Holland at PSV, and he was very successful during his tenure at the club as he won the Eredivisie title and the Dutch Cup in the 22/23 season. The former Man Utd star has also been rumoured to be in the running for the managerial job at Coventry City.
Leicester definitely have some exciting candidates, and it will be interesting to see whether they go down the more experienced route in Moyes or Potter, or whether they take more of a risk and hire a manager like van Nistelrooy.
Why did Leicester sack Steve Cooper?
It was always going to be a tough ask for Cooper due to formerly being the manager of one of Leicester’s biggest rivals – Nottingham Forest. This added more pressure and saw fans turn quickly when results were going against them. Cooper was known for his good defensive setup at Nottingham Forest, but he hasn’t been able to replicate this at Leicester, with the club conceding 23 goals in 12 Premier League matches.
Cooper has only been manager of the club since the summer after Enzo Maresca left Leicester and became manager of Chelsea. Now, the Foxes will be hoping to find a manager with a positive tactical setup who can turn the morale around at the club and start producing some results as quickly as possible. The next manager has a huge job on his hands as survival will be the target and with Leicester only promoted from the Championship last season, they are still one of the favourites to be relegated. They currently sit 16th but are only two points above the relegation zone and face Newcastle, Brighton, Liverpool and Man City in their next 7 games.
