Next Leicester manager odds: New favourite as Potter overlooked

Updated on

Many believed that Graham Potter would become the next Leicester manager following the sacking of Steve Cooper, but it looks like this will not be the case. Potter was heavily linked to the job back in the summer and was the bookies favourite to be the next manager in the Leicester City dugout after Cooper was sacked this week.

Now, the next Leicester manager odds have completely changed, with Ruud van Nistelrooy the new clear favourite.

Next Leicester manager betting odds

Graham Potter is still in the running for the job at the King Power Stadium; however, his odds have drastically changed, with the Englishman now 11/2 to become the Leicester manager. His odds were as short at 6/4 when Cooper was sacked, but it looks like he now has less of a chance of taking the job. Ruud van Nistelrooy is the clear favourite now, with the former Manchester United assistant coach wanting to get back into management as soon as possible.

Ruud van Nistelrooy now favourite to be next Leicester manager

Ruud van Nistelrooy was already in a Premier League dugout this season. He became the assistant manager of Manchester United in the summer and worked under Erik ten Hag until he was sacked in October. After ten Hag was sacked, van Nistelrooy became the interim head coach, and he performed well. As interim head coach, van Nistelrooy took charge of four matches. Two of these were in the Premier League, one was in the Europa League, and one was in the Carabao Cup. The Dutchman ended up winning three of these matches and drawing the other, with Man Utd scoring 11 goals and only conceding three goals.

He was recently linked to the vacant managerial job at Coventry in the Championship, but since Cooper was sacked by Leicester, van Nistelrooy has been heavily linked to the job at the Foxes.

Who is Ruud van Nistelrooy?

Most will also know Ruud van Nistelrooy from his playing career, where he became a legend at Manchester United and a cult hero at Real Madrid, whilst he also played for Malaga and PSV. The 48-year-old managed to win the Golden Boot on nine occasions across various competitions including the Premier League and the Champions League. He managed 35 goals in 70 appearances for the Netherlands and managed 327 goals and 75 assists in 519 club appearances.

Since retiring, van Nistelrooy has been an assistant coach for the Netherlands twice and has also been in the ranks at PSV, where he has managed many of their youth sides. He was then promoted and became the manager of PSV’s senior side. His most successful stint in the dugout so far was at PSV. Ruud van Nistelrooy only managed 50 games whilst at PSV, but he achieved 2.20 points per game and won the Eredivisie title and the Dutch Cup in the 22/23 season.

Why do Leicester want van Nistelrooy?

Something that frustrated the Leicester City owners, fans and players was the style of football Steve Cooper was playing. He is known for his more defensive style of play and Leicester would have known that when they signed him, but his defensive, low possession style was not producing results, with the Foxes only winning two Premier League games. They have also only kept one clean sheet in the division and have conceded 23 goals.

Leicester most likely want a manager like van Nistelrooy due to his style of football, with the Dutchman being known for a more possession-based approach. He enjoys allowing talented players to attack opposition defenders, but he also is keen on his defence being strong as well. He is also a young manager who many believe have a lot of potential, and is a big name in the football world, so would no doubt please the Leicester fan base.

With December around the corner, the fixtures start to heat up, with a lot of games to play over Christmas, so Leicester will need to get their next manager in sooner rather than later so that they can try to turn their fortunes around.

Why is Potter not being considered?

Graham Potter is highly-rated, with many left very impressed by the progression he managed whilst at Brighton. They looked likely to be relegated, but Potter managed to turn things around and showed that he is a great coach as they started to become a team battling for the top half and the European qualification spots under his tenure.

He would have been a great option for Leicester, but they apparently want to look elsewhere. They were locked in talks with the Englishman when they were trying to replace Enzo Maresca in the summer but were unable to agree on a deal with Potter, and it looks like this could be the reason why he is not in contention now.
