The pressure continues to mount on Ruben Amorim after Manchester United’s latest defeat at the weekend. Despite overseeing just nine Premier League wins in 33 matches, the club has so far resisted making a change, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe opting for patience. However, that patience is unlikely to last much longer if results fail to improve.
The 3-1 defeat to Brentford was another reminder that something has to give. Yet Amorim remains stubborn in his approach, refusing to alter his tactics, and it’s this inflexibility that looks increasingly likely to cost him his job.
Attention has already turned to possible successors, with several high-profile names being linked. Former England manager Gareth Southgate is in the mix, and UK betting sites have made him their joint favourite alongside Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, should Amorim’s struggles continue.
Next Man United manager odds
Just like last season, Manchester United once again find themselves languishing in the bottom half of the table, and Ruben Amorim is under increasing pressure to spark a turnaround if he wants to hold onto his job. The defeat to Brentford has only deepened concerns, with many questioning where the next victory will come from.
The upcoming clash against Sunderland will be a real test, as the Black Cats are flying high in the top six and full of confidence. With speculation mounting, a host of big names are being linked to the hot seat, and there’s little doubt plenty of them would relish the opportunity to take charge at Old Trafford.

Glasner joint favourite to replace Ruben Amorim
The pressure is definitely on Amorim to improve the situation at Manchester United. His record in the Premier League is poor, with the club winning nine, drawing seven and losing 17 of their 33 matches in the division since he took over. They have also scored just 39 goals, whilst they have conceded 53.
The club finished 15th last season and currently sit 14th, so it doesn’t really look like the former Sporting CP boss has managed to get any better over the summer, despite hundreds of millions being spent during the transfer window.
There are some top managers in the running to replace Amorim, with Oliver Glasner at the head of the betting. This shouldn’t come as a shock as the Austrian manager has achieved remarkable things whilst taking charge of Crystal Palace.
In his 69 matches in charge of the Eagles, Glasner has won 33, drawn 21 and only lost 15. They have won the FA Cup and the Community Shield with Glasner in charge and have qualified for Europe, something that fans could only dream of a year ago.
More so, the Palace manager plays a similar style to Amorim, albeit with a lot more success, and this could be something that the Man Utd hierarchy would want from any possible successor. Glasner’s strengths were shown once again as the Eagles recently beat league leaders Liverpool. Palace are now the only undefeated team left in the Premier League.
Gareth Southgate also in the mix
Gareth Southgate is also in the frame, with supports suggesting he is on a three-man shortlist that also contains Glasner, and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.
Southgate did well whilst manager of England, guiding the Three Lions to two European Championship finals, but he hasn’t managed at club level since he was in charge of Middlesbrough from 2006-2009, so he would seen as a risky appointment. This is as opposed to both Glasner and Iraola, who are both more accustomed to the day-to-day running of a Premier League football club nowadays.
