Manchester United picked up a crucial victory against Sunderland last weekend, but this still hasn’t reduced the current pressure that Ruben Amorim is under. Despite overseeing just 10 Premier League wins in 34 matches, the club has so far resisted making a change, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe opting for patience. However, that patience is unlikely to last much longer if results fail to improve consistently.

Attention has already turned to possible successors, with several high-profile names being linked. Former England manager Gareth Southgate is in the mix, and he is among the favourites at UK betting sites, but Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is now the clear favourite, with his odds shortening and it looks like he could be the one that the club targets should Amorim’s struggles continue.

Ruben Amorim will be happy that the club won on the weekend, but he will know that he is under increasing pressure to spark a turnaround if he wants to hold onto his job. The big issue for Amorim now is the fact that their next game is against Liverpool. Man United now have a couple of weeks to prepare for this game and try to win two Premier League games in a row for the first time this campaign.

With speculation still mounting, a host of big names are being linked to the hot seat, and there’s little doubt plenty of them would relish the opportunity to take charge at Old Trafford.

Glasner now clear favourite to replace Ruben Amorim, with Carrick in the running

The pressure is definitely on Amorim to improve the situation at Manchester United. His record in the Premier League is poor, with the club winning 10, drawing seven and losing 17 of their 34 matches in the division since he took over. They have also scored just 41 goals, whilst they have conceded 53.

The club finished 15th last season and now sit 10th, so there has been a slight improvement in league position, but it’s definitely not enough, especially with hundreds of millions being spent during the transfer window.

There are some top managers in the running to replace Amorim, with Oliver Glasner at the head of the betting. This shouldn’t come as a shock as the Austrian manager has achieved remarkable things whilst taking charge of Crystal Palace. His odds were around 5/1, but they are now 2/1, despite Man United beating Sunderland on the weekend.

In his 73 matches in charge of the Eagles, Glasner has won 36, drawn 21 and only lost 16. They have won the FA Cup and the Community Shield with Glasner in charge and have qualified for Europe, something that fans could only dream of a year ago.

More so, the Palace manager plays a similar style to Amorim, albeit with a lot more success, and this could be something that the Man Utd hierarchy would want from any possible successor. Glasner’s strengths were shown once again as the Eagles recently beat league leaders Liverpool.

Former Manchester United star Michael Carrick is also in the running. He has not been in a job since he left Middlesbrough in June, but he was the interim manager for Manchester United for three matches, winning two and drawing one. Carrick won many trophies as a player for the club, and no doubt would be keen for the job.

Gareth Southgate also in the mix

Gareth Southgate is also in the frame, with supports suggesting he is on a three-man shortlist that also contains Glasner, and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.

Southgate did well whilst manager of England, guiding the Three Lions to two European Championship finals, but he hasn’t managed at club level since he was in charge of Middlesbrough from 2006-2009, so he would seen as a risky appointment. This is as opposed to both Glasner and Iraola, who are both more accustomed to the day-to-day running of a Premier League football club nowadays.
