Middlesbrough have decided to part ways with Michael Carrick following a campaign which saw them finish tenth in the Championship. They began the season as one of the favourites to make the playoffs, but four defeats in their last six games saw them end the season poorly and ultimately fall short of a return to the Premier League. The former West Ham, Man Utd and Spurs midfielder managed 136 matches whilst in charge of the Teesside club, winning just under half of those games.

The latest betting odds for the next Middlesbrough manager are wide open. Betting sites initially had Steve Cooper and Rob Edwards as the clear favourites to take over. Those craving an experienced head will be delighted to see ex-Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche edge his way into contention, whilst the likes of Robbie Keane and Danny Rohl are both towards the start of their managerial careers.

Steve Cooper and Rob Edwards the favourites for Middlesbrough job
Although both have seen their odds ease, Cooper and Edwards remain the early favourites for the job at Middlesbrough.
Steve Cooper began last season at Leicester, but was sacked after five months in charge of the Foxes. Cooper actually had Leicester out of the relegation zone when he was sacked. Since he left, they dropped into the Premier League bottom three and were relegated back to the Championship after the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy failed spectacularly. Cooper was also the manager of Swansea in the Championship for two years, and then moved to Nottingham Forest. Cooper turned Forest from a bottom-half Championship side to a comfortable Premier League team after getting the club promoted in his first season and then keeping them in England’s top flight.
Rob Edwards was in charge of Luton until January, having been there for just over two years, and 103 games. Edwards, who has also managed at Watford and Forest Green, managed to achieve the unthinkable when he got Luton promoted to the Premier League. They style proved attractive and had its fans, but was arguably naïve, as they ultimately ended up getting relegated. Their return to the Championship got off to a surprisingly slow start, never gaining any real momentum, and Edwards was eventually sacked not long after the Christmas period. The decision to replace Edwards failed to pay dividends though, with Luton relegated to League 1 – their second demotion in as many seasons.
Jon Dahl Tomasson is currently manager of Sweden, but he would come with his fair share of English footballing experience. Tomasson first came to England as a player, joining Newcastle in the late 90s, while his managerial experience includes a year and a half at Blackburn. His time there began well, as Rovers narrowly missed out on the playoffs, but second season syndrome kicked in after that, with Tomasson eventually leaving the following February.
