Next Middlesbrough manager odds: Liverpool legend sees odds slashed

Updated on

The race to become Middlesbrough’s next manager has taken a twist after former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard saw his odds for the position cut dramatically. Last Friday, betting sites had Gerrard priced up as an unlikely 33/1 shot to make the move back into the English leagues, but he’s since been cut dramatically and is now vying for favouritism.

The job became available after Middlesbrough decided to part ways with Michael Carrick following a campaign which saw them finish tenth in the Championship. They began the season as one of the favourites to make the playoffs, but four defeats in their last six games saw them end the season poorly and ultimately fall short of a return to the Premier League. The former West Ham, Man Utd and Spurs midfielder managed 136 matches whilst in charge of the Teesside club, winning just under half of those games.

The betting odds for the next Middlesbrough manager have seen a number of twists and turns already, with Steve Cooper initially installed as the favourite. But, while Cooper still towards the head of the betting, Steven Gerrard is now the second favourite to step into the Boro hotseat, marginally behind former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards. Other contenders come from both ends of the managerial spectrum. Those craving an experienced head will be delighted to see ex-Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche edge his way into contention, whilst Danny Rohl is still towards the start of his managerial career.

Steven Gerrard or Rob Edwards? Who are the favourites for the Middlesbrough’s job?

While Steven Gerrard has only surged towards the top of the betting market lately, Rob Edwards has always been amongst the favourites for the job at Middlesbrough.

Gerrard will need little introduction to most football fans, having made over 700 appearances at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield. Gerrard’s managerial career got off to a flying start, leading Rangers through a record-breaking season, and ultimately winning the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership whilst remaining unbeaten. Aston Villa eventually poached Gerrard, but his time at Villa Park was far more mixed, and he was sacked after less than a year in charge. Gerrard’s next move was into the Saudi league, with Al-Ettifaq, but it came to an end after 1½ years by mutual consent.

Rob Edwards was in charge of Luton until January, having been there for just over two years, and 103 games. Edwards, who has also managed at Watford and Forest Green, managed to achieve the unthinkable when he got Luton promoted to the Premier League. They style proved attractive and had its fans, but was arguably naïve, as they ultimately ended up getting relegated. Their return to the Championship got off to a surprisingly slow start, never gaining any real momentum, and Edwards was eventually sacked not long after the Christmas period. The decision to replace Edwards failed to pay dividends though, with Luton relegated to League 1 – their second demotion in as many seasons.
