Next Prime Minister betting: Labour leader odds now point to Rayner

2H662G9 The Street Sign for Downing Street in London where.the residences of the British Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer are located

Former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has seen her odds of becoming the next Labour leader cut, after her tax affairs were cleared by HMRC.

A leadership fight looks increasingly likely, after Labour suffered a terrible set of results in May’s local elections.

The expectation is now that Health Secretary Wes Streeting will put himself forward as a candidate to replace Sir Keir Starmer as Prime Minister, triggering a race that is also likely to include both Rayner and former Labour leader Ed Miliband.

Next Prime Minister betting odds

Until recently, Andy Burnham had been the clear favourite to be the next leader of the Labour Party. However, the Mayor of Greater Manchester could only become Prime Minister once he secured a seat in parliament, and so he’ll effectively be out of contention if a leadership battle is imminent.

Burnham remains prominent in the latest betting, but most new UK betting sites have now flipped their markets, shortening Rayner’s odds from 9/1 yesterday to as short as 2/1 in places.

Who are the favourites to be the next Prime Minister?

As already mentioned, Angela Rayner, Wes Streeting and Andy Burnham are the three names at the head of the betting to become the UK’s next Prime Minister, with Ed Miliband another name thought to be in the reckoning.

Angela Rayner

Angela Rayner was first elected to parliament as the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne in 2015.

It didn’t take long till she was promoted to the Shadow Cabinet, and she has since gone on to become the Deputy Prime Minister.

Rayner’s appointment would most likely signify a change in policy direction towards the left. Many feel she would appeal to the more traditional working class roots of the Labour Party, and she may emerge as Streeting’s main rival, should Burnham be unable to stand.

Wes Streeting

Wes Streeting, the MP for Ilford North, was first elected to parliament in 2015.

He was quickly promoted to the shadow cabinet following Sir Keir Starmer’s appointment as Leader of the Labour Party, becoming the Shadow Health Secretary in 2021, before taking up the equivalent role when Labour came back into power in July 2024.

The Health Secretary has never hidden his desire to become Britain’s Prime Minister, so he may see this as the ideal time to throw his hat into the ring.

Andy Burnham

Andy Burnham spent 16 years in parliament, as the MP for Leigh, including periods as the Shadow Secretary for Education and Health before being promoted to Shadow Home Secretary under Jeremy Corbyn.

Burnham left parliament in 2017 to become Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017, and was re-elected in 2021 and 2024.

However, he has made his desire to return to parliament abundantly clear, with his sights undoubtedly set on challenging Keir Starmer in due course.

Ed Miliband

Former Labour leader Ed Miliband is the other name in contention for the role.

He was chosen as Labour’s leader following Gordon Brown’s resignation in the aftermath of the 2010 General Election, notably seeing off the challenge of Andy Burnham.

His time as leader came to an end after Labour’s defeat in the 2015 General Election, but he returned to the front bench once Keir Starmer took charge of the party.

He is now Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, but may fancy a second shot at leading his party.
