Southampton have begun their search for a new manager, after Will Still’s disappointing time on the south coast was cut short. A number of betting sites have priced up their favourites to take over from Still, and it’s ex-Saints boss Russell Martin who heads the betting, with another former Southampton manager also in the running in the form of Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Despite starting the season as one of the favourites to be promoted to the Premier League, the Saints find themselves in 21st place in the Championship. That leaves them just one place outside the relegation zone, and 10 points off the final playoff spot. It’s therefore no great surprise to see Will Still’s reign cut short, despite just 16 matches in charge.

Who are the favourites to be the next Southampton manager?
Russell Martin is the clear favourite to be reappointed as Southampton’s manager. Russell was the man who led the Saints to promotion in the 2023/24 season, but they struggled badly on their return to the Premier League before eventually parting ways with Martin in mid-December. Martin’s time at Rangers was short-lived, so he’s expected to be keen to return to his former club if the opportunity presents itself.
Michael Carrick’s name is next in the betting to become Southampton’s next manager. Carrick spent nearly three years in charge of Middlesbrough, guiding them into the playoffs in that time, but he was unable to steer them back to the top flight, and was ultimately sacked after a tenth place finish.
Brendan Rodgers has just become available after parting ways with Celtic, but he did initially do well in Scotland, and at Leicester and Liverpool before that, so his appointment would more than likely be well received.
Ralph Hasenhuttl is the second former Saints boss to be linked with a return to the south coast. The Austrian kept Southampton in the Premier League throughout his time at the club. An 11th place finish won him plaudits, but was balanced out to some degree by two 9-0 defeats. Hasenhuttl moved back to the Bundesliga to manage Wolfsburg, but he lasted just over a year and is now available for work once again.
