Hosts could prove tricky opponents for England in opener
England Women missed out on making the first UEFA Women’s Nations League finals when they finished second in their group with a goal difference one worse than the Netherlands last term.
Sarina Wiegman’s side begin their campaign to make the final stages of the competition at the second attempt in Friday night’s clash against Portugal in Portimao.
Their other game in this window is a huge showdown against world champions Spain at Wembley on Wednesday in a rematch of the 2023 Women’s World Cup final.
However, England would be well advised not to look ahead to that game too soon as Portugal could prove tricky opponents.
The home side haven’t lost any of their last 12 matches, and while they have been playing at a lower level in the Euro 2025 Qualifying League B, their performances in that event, with five wins and a draw, earned them their place in this competition.
England are strong favourites with match odds of 2/11, and the Lionesses have not lost any of their last four away matches, but Portugal should put up a good show and are worth backing getting a two-goal handicap start.
Portugal performed well against the elite teams in their first World Cup appearance, losing only 1-0 to the Netherlands and holding the mighty USA team to a goalless draw.
Having got used to winning during their impressive run in 2024, the home side will be looking forward to testing themselves against a top team again and the visitors can expect to face a battle.
- Portugal Women vs England Women tip 1: Portugal +2 on handicap @ 11/8 with bet365
Clinton can keep up impressive start
Grace Cilinton has made an excellent start after stepping up to international level a year ago, with three goals in five appearances and the young midfielder could add to her tally in Portugal.
With Wiegman likely to field her strongest possible line-up against Spain, this is the match where she may be more tempted to take a look at some of the emerging players in her squad and the Manchester United player has shown no lack of nerve on the international stage so far.
Clinton has notched five goals in 13 Women’s Super League games for United this season and will be eager to get her first competitive international goal after friendly strikes against Austria, South Africa and Switzerland.
- Portugal Women vs England Women tip 2: Grace Clinton anytime goalscorer @ 7/4 with bet365
Silva could shine for the hosts
The home team have a lively goal threat in Diana Silva, who looks worth putting in a shots-on-target bet builder wager along with England hotshot Alessio Russo.
The Sporting striker scored five goals in Portugal’s Women’s Euros play-off games from October to December, second only to Frida Maanum of Norway, and she can get at least one shot on England’s goal.
Russo can be backed to have two or more shots on target even if she doesn’t add to her impressive tally of 20 international goals. Russo has been in fine form for Arsenal in the WSL and is second in the top-scorer list with eight goals in 14 matches.
- Portugal Women vs England Women tip 3: Bet Builder – Diana Silva over 0.5 shots on target, Alessia Russo over 1.5 shots on target @ 9/2 with bet365
