Run over just shy of 3m1f, the Gold Cup typically goes to a very classy sort and, interestingly, the last five winners of the contest were bred in France. A small but top-class field has been declared for today’s big showdown and our expert has picked a nap in the feature race.

Selection: Spillane’s Tower @ 5/2 with Ladbrokes

Jimmy Mangan hoping for a bit of luck this season

Trainer Jimmy Mangan has had little luck this season with his stable star Spillane’s Tower, but the JP McManus-owned seven-year-old son of Walk In The Park can end the term on a high in the feature race of the week at Punchestown.

Never out of the first two around this course, Spillane’s Tower backed up his Grade 1 Gold Cup Novice Chase victory at Fairyhouse last season with victory over this course and distance in the Grade 1 Champion Novice Chase.

He saw off Monty’s Star in a thriller on the day and was put straight in near the head of the market for the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day.

Beaten half a length by Fact To File in the John Durkan on his return to action, he had Galopin Des Champs behind on the day, but he then flopped when sent off favourite for the King George at Christmas and hasn’t been seen since.

Spillane’s Tower missed Cheltenham and was a last minute withdrawal at Aintree due to the ground.

However, he will be a fresh horse here on more suitable ground and that could stand him in good stead compared with others in the race that have had long hard seasons.

Willie Mullins superstar vulnerable again?

Fresh off the back of winning another British Jump Trainers’ Championship, Willie Mullins will be bidding to end the season on an equal high in Ireland with Galopin Des Champs.

He was brilliant earlier in the season when landing the Savills Chase and the Irish Gold Cup before finishing second in the Blue Riband at Cheltenham behind Inothewayurthinkin.

However, he’s been turned over at short odds in the last two renewals of this contest and he’s not getting any younger.

He has no Fastorslow to worry about this year, but he could be vulnerable to a fresher horse such as Spillane’s Tower and there have to be doubts about whether he’s as good going right-handed as he is left.
