Punchestown Festival Day 4 Betting Tips

Run over two miles, the Irish Champion Hurdle typically goes to the best hurdler across Britain and Ireland with 11 of the last 13 winners sent off favourite or joint-favourite on the day.

A mouthwatering clash is on the cards for Friday’s race featuring a clash of the last three Cheltenham champion hurdlers and our expert has run the rule over the chief contenders.

Local support could see State Man going off as favourite

State Man is bidding to become the first horse since Hurricane Fly to win three Champion Hurdles in a row. He has a fair way to go to beat the Fly’s four wins in this contest, but Willie Mullins’ star should be well up to the job and has unfinished business to take care of.

Last year’s Cheltenham Champion Hurdle winner has had a topsy-turvy season. Star mare Brighterdaysahead got the better of him in the Morgiana Hurdle in November and he was 31 lengths behind the same mare when third at Leopardstown’s Christmas Festival.

A match with stablemate Lossiemouth was up next in the Irish Champion Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival in February but he was handed a comfortable success when the mare fell early on. Nonetheless, he did all he had to do on the day to beat Daddy Long Legs by six-and-a-half lengths.

State Man was not a popular pick for Cheltenham success this year and went off at 8/1 but when Constitution Hill fell and Brighterdaysahead failed to fire, the race was at his mercy. He looked an absolute certainty but fell at the last when five lengths in front.

Mullins has clearly worked his magic on State Man in the latter half of the season and he should be fully primed for success on Friday if that fall has done him no harm.

Will Constitution Hill’s jumping hold up this time?

No horse has ever beaten Constitution Hill when he has completed the course. The only thing that has beaten him is himself. After going a perfect ten out of ten to start off his career, including eight Grade 1 victories, he has fallen on his last two outings at Cheltenham and Aintree.

His jumping has become so worrisome that Nicky Henderson has handed him an Ascot Gold Cup entry for the summer, and the superstar performer looks to be second-guessing himself over hurdles since his first fall.

There have also been questions asked over the rides jockey Nico de Boinville gave the horse on his last couple of outings.

He wasn’t in the best of positions at Aintree last time, so with a new rider aboard in James Bowen, it will be interesting to see if they use more forceful tactics to give Constitution Hill more daylight in front of him. It should be a fascinating contest.
