Rivals need derby relief after troubled week

Rangers and Celtic have rarely had a more difficult week than this one, as both teams have crashed out of this season’s Champions League in the play-off round.

Celtic suffered the embarrassment of losing on penalties to Kairat on Tuesday, having failed to score in both legs against the Kazakhstan outfit.

The blue half of Glasgow were already 3-1 down from the first leg against Club Brugge, before being humiliated 6-0 in Belgium in Wednesday’s away game.

The pressure is certainly ramping up on Russell Martin, with Gers yet to win a Scottish Premiership game after three matches this term. It’s three 1-1 draws so far, against Motherwell, Dundee and St Mirren.

That run has seen the Gers already slip six points behind their major rivals going into Sunday’s first Old Firm derby of the campaign.

Martin can take some hope from last season’s meetings between the sides, when Rangers lost just one of their five match-ups after 90 minutes.

The last meeting was at Ibrox in May and it finished in a 1-1 draw and after a troublesome week for both, a point would probably be seen to be a positive result.

Gers look for a flying start

With Celtic having had the mammoth flight back from Kazakhstan, it wouldn’t be a surprise for Rangers to take the game to their opponents on Sunday.

It’s worth noting that the Gers have taken the lead in each of their last four meetings against the Bhoys, including in both league clashes at Ibrox last term.

In fact, Rangers were in front at half-time in all four of those derby encounters and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a similar story this time around. It might take Celtic a bit of time to get into the game, following their 13-hour journey back to Glasgow, but expect a strong second half from Brendan Rodgers’ men.

Maeda out to make amends

Things could have been much different for Celtic in midweek had Daizen Maeda taken a gilt-edged opportunity in the closing stages.

The Japanese forward went through one-on-one, only to fail to hit the target before then missing one of the spot-kicks in the shootout.

Maeda does have a good record in Old Firm matches though, scoring three goals against Rangers last season and finding the net twice in previous derbies at Ibrox.

There were 11 corners in the last Ibrox meeting in May, while 12 corners were won in January’s 3-0 win on home soil for the Gers. Last season’s five Old Firm derbies brought a total of 28 yellow cards, an average of 5.6 per game and with plenty on the line for both clubs, it could be a busy afternoon for referee Don Robertson.
