Chelsea might be made to wait in Poland

Chelsea have long been expected to lift the UEFA Conference League trophy this season and the Blues have, so far, lived up to their billing as the strongest team in the continent’s third-tier competition.

Enzo Maresca’s side finished top of the League Phase, with six wins from six, before they got past FC Copenhagen, Legia Warsaw and Djurgarden in the knockout stages without too many issues.

The final showdown against Betis, though, is a tougher prospect, albeit it is still an occasion Chelsea should navigate successfully as they hope to land the club’s ninth European trophy.

In contrast, Betis, who have ended up in sixth place in Spain this term, were struggling to progress in the first stage after just one win in their first four games, but they eventually recovered sufficiently to finish 15th.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men needed to come through the play-off round, edging out Gent, before overcoming Vitoria de Guimaraes, Jagiellonia Bialystok and, in the semis, recent runners-up in this competition, Fiorentina.

Stopping Chelsea is a whole different task, though, and Betis, who have failed to win any of their last five games, do not look good enough to trouble the English side too much in midweek.

Chelsea have finished the campaign superbly, winning seven of their last eight matches in all competitions, to seal fourth place in the Premier League, although they have not been in front at half-time in any of their previous three outings.

Betis will likely set up to try and frustrate the favourites, especially to begin with, and a dull first 45 minutes could play out with chances set to be at a premium before Maresca’s men establish control after the break.

Neto to net in final

Pedro Neto has not had a great campaign in front of goal, scoring just seven goals in all competitions from 44 appearances, but he could be the man for the big occasion for the Blues against Betis.

Neto last found the back of the net in the 2-1 win over Fulham last month, but in recent games, the forward has been attempting plenty of shots as he aims to improve his tally.

Neto has had a total of 11 shots in his last six outings and he could provide the inspiration in Poland.

Palmer and Cucurella can catch the eye

Finals are often cagey affairs with few goals, and the three UEFA Conference League finals that have been played since this competition was introduced have all ended with three or fewer being scored. Indeed, two of the three finals have ended with a 1-0 scoreline at full-time and a high-scoring spectacle is not anticipated in the latest edition in midweek.

Then, adding Marc Cucurella and Cole Palmer to both have a shot on target on top of under 3.5 total goals in the final boosts the bet builder up to 10/1.

Palmer should be one of Chelsea’s main attacking outlets, and the England man, who has scored 15 goals this season, has had one shot on target in each of his last five matches and in eight of his last nine, while full-back Cucurella has also been effective going forward in recent games.

The Spain international, who scored his seventh goal of the season when firing in the matchwinner against Manchester United recently, has had a shot on target in two of his last three appearances for the Blues.
