Royal Ascot day 2 predictions & tips
The feature contest on the card is the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, featuring last year’s Irish Derby winner Los Angeles and Champion Stakes hero Anmaat. There are also three Group 2s on the card, as well as two huge-field handicaps.
Our expert is taking on the big two in the feature and has two further bets, including one in the Royal Hunt Cup which is bound for Group races.
Duke of Cambridge Stakes – 3.40pm
The Duke Of Cambridge Stakes was won last year by Running Lion, who should put up a bold defence this time around for the Gosdens and Oisin Murphy.
Plenty went right last year, with Murphy able to tack across from a wide draw to take the lead and dictate. Still, given how wide she started, and how far she won by, there can be no doubt that Running Lion was the best horse in the race.
She also ran an even better race later in the season, according to Racing Post Ratings. She was a three-quarter-length second to Friendly Soul in the Prix de L’Opera on Arc weekend at Longchamp.
Her two runs this year have been below her best. The first, in the Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket, was called by the betting as Running Lion drifted from 9/4 out to 3/1. She ran a lot better at Haydock last time, without quite getting to her best.
With cheekpieces fitted, back at a course where she thrives and with a better draw than 12 months ago, Running Lion can make it back-to-back wins in this race.

Prince of Wales’s Stakes – 4.20pm
This time last year, Ombudsman was a complete unknown. He had never run in his life. After making a successful debut at Newmarket on June 22, he followed up in a Leicester novice then went to France.
In winning a Listed race at Deauville and a Group 3 at Longchamp, Ombudsman showed that he was destined for Group 1s in 2025. John Gosden said at the time that he would be minded for big prizes this year.
That considered, his defeat at Sandown on his reappearance three weeks ago can be excused. Ombudsman was short of a run, but still took his form forward by a clear margin in finishing second to Almaqam.
His first try in Group 1 company looks a winnable contest. Favourite Los Angeles is surely vulnerable over 1m2f when there is any emphasis on speed, while Anmaat is older than any winner of this race since it was relaunched in the 1960s. Ombudsman’s smart change of gear can thrust him to the front of the middle-distance division in Britain.

Royal Hunt Cup – 5.00pm
The first three in the ante-post betting for the Royal Hunt Cup were all drawn in the highest four stalls. Normally, that is a good thing as high numbers have a small but clear edge in races over Ascot’s straight mile.
My Cloud is highest of all, which is not much of an extra advantage but it should be enough. This horse is better than a handicapper. He has won his last three, all on straight tracks including this course and distance, and last time at Newbury he looked a Group horse in the making.
The race at Newbury was not well run and My Cloud raced freely. He still managed to make up ground from the rear and win with more in hand than the official distance of a head would imply. The form of that race is working out, the runner-up has won since, and My Cloud can defy a 5lb rise in one of the most competitive handicaps of the year
