Royal Ascot day 2 predictions & tips
The highlight of Wednesday’s Royal Ascot card is the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, where Irish Derby winner Los Angeles lines up against Champion Stakes victor Anmaat. The undercard is just as strong, featuring three Group 2 contests and a pair of ultra-competitive handicaps.
Our expert is opposing the front two in the market for the feature race and has two more selections on the day, including a lively Royal Hunt Cup contender who looks destined for Group company.
Duke of Cambridge Stakes – 3.40pm
Running Lion returns to Royal Ascot looking to defend her Duke of Cambridge Stakes crown, and there’s every chance she can do just that for John and Thady Gosden and jockey Oisin Murphy.
Twelve months ago, Murphy was able to overcome a wide draw by getting across to the front and dictating the pace. Given how dominant she was despite that early disadvantage, there was no doubt she was the class act in the field.
She went on to better that form in the autumn, finishing second to Friendly Soul in the Group 1 Prix de l’Opéra on Arc weekend at Longchamp. That run earned her a higher Racing Post Rating than her Royal Ascot win.
This season hasn’t quite gone to plan yet, with a subdued return in the Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket followed by a more encouraging run at Haydock. Now, back at a track she clearly enjoys, and with cheekpieces applied for the first time, she looks primed to bounce back. With a kinder draw than last year and conditions in her favour, Running Lion has every chance of repeating last year’s success.

Last year, Ombudsman was an unknown quantity. He hadn’t run a race. But after a winning debut at Newmarket on June 22, he quickly made up for lost time with another success in a Leicester novice before heading to France.
There, he stamped himself as a serious talent. Victories in a Listed race at Deauville and a Group 3 at Longchamp confirmed he was a colt going places. Trainer John Gosden made it clear then that the long-term aim was to target top-level honours in 2025.
With that in mind, his recent defeat on seasonal reappearance at Sandown is easy to forgive. He looked in need of the run, yet still improved on his two-year-old form when finishing second to the smart Almaqam.
Now he gets his first crack at Group 1 company, and it looks a winnable assignment. Los Angeles, the likely favourite, could be vulnerable over this ten-furlong trip if the pace is strong, while Anmaat is older than any winner of this race since its 1960s reboot. Ombudsman’s sharp turn of foot could be the difference, and this may be the moment he announces himself as Britain’s next top middle-distance performer.

Royal Hunt Cup – 5.00pm
The top three in the ante post market for the Royal Hunt Cup all landed among the highest four stalls at the draw, which could prove significant. Historically, high numbers hold a slight but consistent edge over Ascot’s straight mile, and that trend could play out again here.
My Cloud has the highest draw of all, which may only be a small boost, but it certainly does no harm. More importantly, he looks like a horse well above handicap level. He arrives seeking a fourth straight win, with all three previous victories coming on straight tracks, including one over this very course and distance.
His latest success at Newbury was particularly eye catching. The race lacked early pace and he raced too keenly, yet still found enough to come from off the pace and win a touch more comfortably than the margin suggests. The runner up has franked the form since by winning next time out.
A five pound rise seems fair, and on the evidence of his last few starts, My Cloud still looks well treated. He brings the right profile for one of the most competitive handicaps of the week and looks a major player.
