Royal Ascot day 4 predictions & tips
Day four of the 2025 Royal Ascot jamboree takes place on Friday. There are two Group 1s and a Group 2 on a fantastic afternoon where the classic generation take centre stage.
The Coronation Stakes at 4.20 is the highlight but the feature is ably supported by the sprinters in the earlier Commonwealth Cup, while the King Edward VII Stakes is the standout later on the card.
Commonwealth Cup – 3.05pm
The first Group 1 of the afternoon features the 3yo sprinters, and Charlie Appleby’s Shadow Of Light gets a confident vote.
This son of Lope De Vega proved to be one of the leading juveniles of 2024 when a four-time winner, notably in the Middle Park Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.
He returned to racing’s headquarters for the first classic of the season and ran a cracker when finishing third of 11 to his stablemate Ruling Court, showing a good turn of foot to go to the front under 2f out, only to be collared late on and ultimately outstayed.
That form rates the best on offer in this field and, with this drop back to six furlongs looking a good move for this strong-travelling colt, he makes plenty of appeal.
Ger Lyons’ speedy filly Babouche is feared most on the back of her easy victory over Whistlejack in the Lacken Stakes at Naas, while French 2,000 Guineas runner-up Jonquil and US challenger Shisospicy also appeal in what promises to be a cracking contest.
However, the Godolphin operation are expected to gain compensation for Ruling Court’s defeat to rival Field Of Gold in the St James’ Palace Stakes here.

Coronation Stakes – 4.20pm
The Coronation Stakes lacks the quality of the colt’s equivalent, the St James’ Palace Stakes run on Tuesday, but still promises to be a cracking contest. French filly Zarigana looks the way to go.
Francis-Henri Graffard’s daughter of Siyouni has been defeated only once in her career to date, and though she needed the help of the stewards to land the French 1000 Guineas on her most recent start, she is fancied to make it 5-6 in style here.
She went down by a nose at Longchamp to She’s Perfect but lost momentum at a crucial stage when that rival shifted left and also lost her whip.
That effort still went down as an improvement in form, though, and with more progress on the cards, she can land this prestigious prize.
The supplemented pair Kon Tiki and Falakeyah are both exciting prospects and seem sure to go well but the French filly can use her greater experience to telling effect.

King Edward VII Stakes – 5.35pm
The King Edward VII Stakes goes off at 5.35 and the latest renewal of the Ascot Derby looks a highly competitive 11-runner event.
Ralph Beckett saw his Derby hope Pride Of Arras disappoint behind comfortable winner Lambourn at Epsom but can land this Group 2 contest with Amiloc, this highly-progressive son of Postponed.
Amiloc has yet to taste defeat in his four runs to date and really impressed when an emphatic winner of the Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood last month, storming clear late on and relishing his first go beyond 1m.
Given he is a gelding, he was unable to contest the Derby but there’s no doubt we have yet to see the best of him and he can go 5-5 here.
Aidan O’Brien’s Lingfield Derby Trial victor Puppet Master appeals as the one to give him most to do, although fellow Irish challenger Zahrann rates a fascinating contender and the fast-improving son of Night Of Thunder shouldn’t be underestimated.
