England able see off stubborn Scotland
Going off the displays in the opening round of fixtures in this year’s Six Nations, you would expect a comfortable win for England at Murrayfield.
Steve Borthwick’s men cruised past Wales, 48-7 at Twickenham, while Scotland were on the end of a surprise defeat in Italy.
A lot of last Saturday’s 18-15 loss to the Azzurri could be put down to the very wet conditions, while the Scots were also hit hard by the second-half sin-binning of George Turner.
It’s now three defeats in their last four matches for Gregor Townsend’s squad and there is growing talk that his position is under serious threat.
Scotland do often raise their game against the old enemy and had won four Calcutta Cup matches in a row prior to last year’s defeat at Twickenham.
England have won their last 11 internationals and will head to Edinburgh full of confidence, as they seek a first win there since 2020.

History suggests tight affair
Recent history has shown that even when England have been strong favourites, they have rarely beaten Scotland comfortably.
The Red Roses’ last two wins at Murrayfield (in 2016 and 2002) saw them victorious by seven and six points respectively.
In fact, nine points is the largest winning margin of their last seven meetings, with the two teams even playing out a 38-38 draw in the 2019 Six Nations.
Last year’s match-up at Twickenham was another tight affair, with England eventually coming through 16-15.

Freeman can play a key role for Borthwick
Tommy Freeman has made an outstanding start to what could be a long England career, with the 24-year-old catching the eye since his debut in 2022.
The Northampton man has 20 international appearances to his name and has already bagged eight tries for his country.
Freeman scored the final try in last week’s win over Wales and also crossed the whitewash in the 2025 Calcutta Cup clash.
Just two of the last six matches between the two sides have seen over 40 points and only one of the last 13 Murrayfield meetings have gone beyond the 50-point threshold.
One of the key factors in England’s recent successes has been quick starts, with Borthwick’s men getting on the front foot early.
The visitors head north of the border having scored the opening try in seven of their last eight international matches.
