The road to the 2025 Grand National took another turn on Monday afternoon, as six horses dropped out ahead of Saturday’s race at Aintree. L’Homme Presse, Capodanno, Velvet Elvis, and Minella Drama, who had all been guaranteed a spot on the Grand National runners list, have been withdrawn at the five day declarations stage, along with Fontaine Collonges and Quick Wave, who were already below the 34-runner cut line.
Their absence opens the door for Hyland, Celebre D’Allen, Three Card Brag, and Twig, who will now line up in the world’s most famous steeplechase. However, one place remains undecided, with Duffle Coat, Shakem Up’Arry, and Roi Mage all in contention. The final slot will be determined by handicap rankings, or in the event of a tie, a random ballot.
While the official declarations won’t be finalised until Thursday morning, any additional withdrawals could see latecomers sneaking into the field at the last moment.
I Am Maximus returns, but Stumptown emerges as new Grand National favourite
Reigning champion I Am Maximus is back to defend his title, as Willie Mullins’ leading runner, but betting markets suggest a new contender may be the one to beat. Stumptown, fresh from success at the Cheltenham Festival, has taken over as the Grand National favourite, currently priced at 8/1.
Mullins, who finally ended a near two-decade Grand National drought with I Am Maximus in 2024, will be hoping to edge closer to Red Rum’s legendary three-time record. However, competition will be fierce, with Gordon Elliott fielding multiple challengers, including the newly confirmed Three Card Brag, while 2024 Irish Grand National winner Intense Raffles also remains in the mix.
