The Memorial Tournament Betting Tips

Updated on

World number one Scottie Scheffler was unable to win his third successive tournament at last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge, but his fourth place at Fort Worth means he heads to Muirfield Village to defend the Memorial tournament in fine fettle.

There is no Rory McIlroy in Ohio this week, but the other top dogs from the PGA Tour will be at ‘Jack’s Place’ attempting to win the latest Signature Event.

While Scheffler is unsurprisingly the hot favourite to retain his crown, there are plenty of others waiting in the wings to force the issue on this established track where quality approach shots can be the difference between success and failure.

Thomas has found his groove

The player who could give Scheffler the most to think about this week is Justin Thomas, who broke a three-year winless run when he won the RBC Heritage last month.

The man from Kentucky had been knocking on the door for weeks having finished runner-up in the American Express and the Valspar Championship, and he proved his Hilton Head victory was no fluke when he was second again at the most recent signature event, the Truist Championship.

While a subsequent missed cut at the US PGA Championship was a disappointment, he has shown he is still a big threat at the top level and he has a game perfectly suited to Muirfield Village.

Thomas is ranked fifth in shots-gained on approach and also possesses the driving quality to get in the right positions to pepper the greens.

He has two top-10 finishes in this tournament and also lost in a play-off here when the course hosted the 2020 Workday Charity Open, so he should be comfortably at home.

Straka now a force at this level

Sepp Straka proved too good for Thomas and the rest of the field at the Truist and that was the second time the Austrian has been in the winner’s circle this year after his January success at the American Express.

He blasted out of the traps at the Philadelphia Cricket Club with a 63 and this is another course where his strengths are well suited.

He will feel he has unfinished business at this Ohio test after closing rounds of 73 and 75 saw him slip to 16th two years ago and then it was a similar story 12 months ago when a final-day 76 meant he had to settle for fifth.

Straka appears a stronger character now and only Scheffler has been a more proficient approach player on the tour this year, so there is plenty of value to be had in backing the European Ryder Cup hopeful.

Kim cannot be discounted

Si Woo Kim is a player who can make a strong challenge this week if his putter behaves itself.

After missing out on a place at the Masters, the South Korean has played every week since, posting four top-20 finishes in his six efforts.

Those included eighth places at the Heritage and the US PGA and he has finished in the top 20 in each of his last five visits to Muirfield Village, including fourth two years ago when a closing 73 left him two shots off the pace.

The top two that week – Viktor Hovland and Denny McCarthy – had hot putters, so Kim can be a factor if he can get close to the cup.
