Deep rough and lightning-fast greens should ensure a tough test for the 156 competitors, with red-hot favourite Scottie Scheffler the man to beat following his PGA Championship success at Quail Hollow last month.

Scheffler can confirm superiority
Even by US Open standards, Oakmont will provide a tough test this week, but if anyone looks set to be up to the challenge, then that man is Scheffler.
The world number one has taken his game to another level in the last few weeks, winning three of his last four tournaments at the CJ Cup, the PGA Championship and the Memorial Tournament, and it is ominous that he is presented with an examination this week that could play into his hands as the best tee-to-green operator in the game.
Thick rough will have to be avoided at all costs and Scheffler is capable of doing that with an approach-play game that is also unrivalled. If he can get a grip of the greens, then he could prove unstoppable and what looks a slim price is still one that looks worth taking.

Straka could make a big impression
DeChambeau is expected to give Scheffler the most to think about, but it is worth dropping down the market a little where Sepp Straka could provide some excellent value at 35/1.
The Austrian has kicked on a level this year and a Major looks the next step for a player who has tasted PGA Tour success in the American Express and the Truist Championship.
The second of those tournaments was a signature event where the cream of the crop assemble and he will feel he has a point to prove after missing the cut at the PGA.
A solid tee-to-green performer, he could have a less frustrating experience than most and could emerge from the pack to make a big challenge.

Consistent Lowry should be respected
Only Scheffler ranks ahead of Shane Lowry in the PGA Tour’s strokes-gained:tee-to-green statistics, and the consistent Irishman can at least come out on top of the GB & Ireland list.
McIlroy is at the head of the market, but he disappointed at the PGA and failed to make the weekend at last week’s Canadian Open, so he has hardly had the greatest preparation.
Lowry, meanwhile, has finished in the top 20 in 17 of his last 22 efforts and his best US Open performance came at this venue in 2016 when he was tied for second behind Dustin Johnson. Posting victories has been difficult lately but Lowry has been in the shake-up so many times that he can come out on top in this category.
