US Open tennis betting tips

Defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka will face recognisable and rising rivals as they prepare for two weeks of taxing tennis in the Big Apple.

An untimely illness has struck down Sinner, who secured a dominant straight-sets win over Taylor Fritz in last year’s final.

That may kick the door ajar for Carlos Alcaraz, who arrives in fresher form than last year when he suffered a shock second-round defeat to an unseeded player.

Wimbledon quarter-finalist Ben Shelton, who reached the last four in New York two years ago, and British star Jack Draper could also make deep runs again.

On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek has bypassed Sabalenka in terms of favouritism after demonstrating a return to form on hard courts.

And World No.1 Sabalenka, hoping to go back-to-back after her 2024 triumph over Jessica Pegula, has been handed a tougher draw than the second-seeded Pole.

But with no repeat men’s champion since Roger Federer’s five-peat ended in 2008, and nine different women’s winners in the last 10 years, Flushing Meadows remains the most unpredictable of majors.

No escape from Alcaraz

Alcaraz is currently riding a wave of momentum after clinching his third straight Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati. That result could be more than just a confidence boost — three of the last six winners of that event, including the last two, have gone on to lift the US Open trophy a few weeks later.

The Spaniard’s record in New York is already impressive. He claimed his maiden Grand Slam title here in 2022 and reached the semi-finals the following year.

His early exit in 2024 to World No.74 Botic van de Zandschulp was largely attributed to fatigue after a packed summer that included Olympic gold in Paris.

But this time, Alcaraz looks fresh and focused. He dropped just two sets en route to the Cincinnati title, dispatching Sinner in a lopsided final that ended prematurely due to illness — the Italian trailing 5-0 in the first set before retiring.

Alcaraz has now won six of his last seven meetings with Sinner, including each of the last three on hard courts. With the draw keeping them apart until a potential final, the World No.2 looks well-positioned to mount another serious title challenge.

Swiatek set for an easier path than Sabalenka

Swiatek won at Flushing Meadows in 2022 and has been the top seed for three straight years, but relatively early exits in 2023 and 2024 have tempered expectations.

That may work in her favour and her preparation has been perfect. She dominated the Cincinnati field without dropping a set and, having played sparingly since Wimbledon, she should arrive fresh and physically primed for the heat and humidity of this Slam.

Her ruthless 6-0, 6-0 dismantling of Amanda Anisimova on Centre Court was a reminder of her ceiling, especially coming just two days after the American had knocked out Sabalenka.

The Belarusian top seed looked off the pace in Cincy, falling 6-1, 6-3 to Elena Rybakina in the quarters, and she has been handed a tougher draw than Swiatek.

Rybakina, Cincinnati finalist Jasmine Paolini and last year’s US Open finalist Pegula are all in her half alongside young stars Mirra Andreeva and Canadian Open champion Victoria Mboko.

Coco Gauff and Madison Keys could block Swiatek’s path in the bottom half but the French Open champion has been affected by some serving problems since Roland Garros while Keys has not had a top-10 win since her Australian Open victory in January and still trails the Pole 5-2 in previous meetings.

Shelton’s serve could be the X-factor

Shelton’s run to the 2023 US Open semi-finals put him on the map, and the 22-year-old has only grown in stature since.

He claimed his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto earlier this month and enters Flushing Meadows ranked No.6 in the world.

Shelton’s booming lefty serve and fearless shotmaking make him a nightmare opponent on fast courts. With a draw that avoids the top four seeds until the quarter-finals, he’s a live outsider at 20/1.
