Welsh Grand National Betting Tips
We have picked out two selections for Saturday’s big race, a nap and a next best and both represent some each-way value at the five-day declaration stage.
Smith aims for more National success
O’Connell has taken his form to another level since being stepped up to marathon trips over the past two seasons. He landed the Lincolnshire National Handicap Chase at Market Rasen on Boxing Day last year over three and a half miles, jumping soundly throughout and making smooth headway before putting the race to bed two out.
The drop back in trip to three miles didn’t inconvenience him next time at Sandown, where he was upped in class from a new mark of 124. He was briefly outpaced three out but rallied strongly once his stamina kicked in, ultimately pulling clear to win going away.
His best run last term came in defeat in the Eider Chase over 4m1f. He travelled well throughout but appeared to tire late on and couldn’t go with the winner in the closing stages.
He returned to winning ways on his most recent start at Sandown from a mark of 132, given a well-timed ride by Gavin Sheehan and drawing further clear from his rivals on the run-in.
With a solid and progressive profile, this searching test should play right to his strengths. He jumps well, goes on any ground and stays all day, and racing again from a mark of 132, he looks capable of being a little better than that. It would be no surprise to see him run a big race.

Owen charge can continue progression
James Owen-trained Dom Of Mary has shown a liking for extreme stamina tests and looks firmly in his element over these marathon distances. The nine-year-old announced himself as a thorough stayer in January 2024 when running away with the Sussex National Handicap Chase at Plumpton, scoring by 10 lengths.
He looked in need of the run on his return after a 254-day absence, before producing a brave effort to defend his Sussex National crown at Plumpton, only being edged out by a neck having looked the likely winner two out.
His two starts this season have both been encouraging. He finished third over an inadequate trip on his reappearance, again shaping as though he would come on for the run after a long break. He then returned to winning ways at Newcastle over 3m6f, his first success for over a year, staying on strongly after the last to get the better of Zertakt.
That form has since been boosted with Zertakt winning at Cheltenham recently. Dom Of Mary now races from a career-high mark of 128, but given his proven stamina, that rise may not be enough to prevent another bold showing.
