A Met Office spokesman has given the UK a glimmer of hope that we could see a White Christmas in some parts of the south of England. Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna told Sky News, “On Christmas Day, we need to keep an eye on the far south of the UK, particularly the south coast of England. There’s just a chance we could see one or two wintry flurries developing.”
Odds on a White Christmas in 2025
Under normal circumstances, we’d expect to see Scottish cities heading the betting for a White Christmas. Indeed, that had been the case in late November, with Edinburgh as short as 6/4 and London out at 10/1.
However the odds are now far closer, with Edinburgh pushed out to 5/1 while London has been cut to 6/1.
While a White Christmas therefore remains unlikely across Britain, there’s a high likelihood that snow will fall across Europe, with snow in both Vienna and Zurich heavily odds-on.
| European Cities | White Christmas Odds | Probability of White Christmas |
| Zurich | 1/9 | 90% |
| Vienna | 1/6 | 85% |
| Edinburgh | 5/1 | 17% |
| Dublin | 6/1 | 14% |
| London | 6/1 | 14% |
| Cardiff | 6/1 | 14% |
| Belfast | 6/1 | 14% |
| Oslo | 12/1 | 8% |
| Berlin | 12/1 | 8% |

When was the last White Christmas in the UK?
Technically, the last white Christmas was in 2023, but it was very light snow and big Christmas fans do not think the snowfall was heavy enough for a ‘proper’ white Christmas.
The last time there was heavy snowfall on Christmas Day across the UK was 2010, which was caused by a weather front colloquially known as the ‘Beast from the East’. There was snow on the ground at 83% of weather stations, which was the highest amount ever recorded. The snow on the ground in 2023 was only 11% and that’s why many do not see it as a proper white Christmas.
