Battle-hardened Warriors to prevail
Super League semi-finals don’t come much bigger than this and Friday’s showdown between local rivals Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards is a must-watch encounter.
Dubbed the Battle of the Borough given the close proximity of the rivals who sit just seven miles apart, this final-four contest won’t be for the faint of heart.
Wigan romped to a 38-0 success when these two met in the semi-finals last season, on their way to winning back-to-back Super League titles.
However, Leigh have turned the tables to some extent, winning the three meetings since, including a 1-0 win at the home of Wigan in round one of this campaign.
The Leopards are a much-more formidable outfit now and they eased past Wakefield with some ease in last week’s eliminator.
However, there have been suggestions that a bug has been rife in the Leigh camp this week, limiting the training time of at least half of the squad, and that untimely setback could be the boost Wigan need.
The champions have had a fortnight to prepare for this contest and they are experts at getting over the line in this kind of contest. Matt Peet’s men should secure a place in their third consecutive Grand Final by covering a handicap of 8.5 points at the Brick Community Stadium.
Prior to this season’s fixtures Wigan had won their previous home meetings with Leigh by margins of 38, 22, 18 and 26 points, and although this latest contest may not be as comprehensive, more disappointment could be coming Leigh’s way on Friday.

Early points on the board crucial
Backing either side to open the scoring courtesy of a penalty-kick at goal looks a good alternative bet as getting points on the board as soon as possible is crucial in matches such as this.
Points can often lead to prizes at this stage of a season and no side likes to go too long without getting a score on the board in play-off matches.
It is also likely that the match officials will be keen to stamp their authority on the game in the early stages too, so an early profit could be secured by way of a successful penalty goal.
There will be plenty of nervous energy on display and that could see players fall foul of the officials right from the opening tackle.
Wigan have prolific goal-kicker Adam Keighran on duty with the boot, while Gareth O’Brien can respond in kind for the visitors, and either man could benefit from any opportunities that come their way, so backing a penalty-goal to open the scoring could pay off.
Wigan cheer could be plentiful
Wigan are chasing a hat-trick of titles and, although they may not have things all their own way early on, their quality should eventually shine through and they should be backed to secure a comfortable passage to Old Trafford by way of a bet builder which pays out at 16/5.
Leigh will make this a battle, but Wigan can still win by seven or more points and even though they may not cut loose to too much of an extent, it would be no surprise to see them get their noses in front and stay there.
The Warriors can score from anywhere in their line-up and their last run-out at home yielded a dominant 22-6 win over in-form Leeds. A similar outcome could be in the offing on Friday.
