Jonny Clayton vs Gary Anderson is the opening fixture this evening. Anderson looked back to his best after beating Ryan Joyce 10-2 in the first round. He produced a 109.96 three-dart average, and it was one of the best performances of the competition so far. It will be tough for him tonight against Clayton, but with such momentum, it wouldn’t be a shock for Anderson to beat the World No.5.
Three other fixtures are taking place, with one seeing Luke Littler, who is the reigning World Matchplay champion and favourite to win the competition this year, take on Nathan Aspinall. Aspinall won this competition back in 2023 and is a confident player, so if he starts well, we could see a shock victory. However, Littler is on fire at the moment, and it’s tough to see how anyone beats him.
Michael van Gerwen is also in action as he takes on fellow Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode. MvG is chasing a historic fourth title at World Matchplay, and he looked solid in his first game against Andrew Gilding, so it’s tough to see anything but a victory for the World No.4.
The toughest match to call is Josh Rock (World No.8) against Stephen Bunting (World No.9). Bunting was taken all the way in the first round against Niels Zonneveld and ended up coming out on top in sudden death, whilst Rock cruised through the first round against Luke Woodhouse. We are backing Rock to continue this momentum with a victory this evening.
